When I asked if you thought sourdough bread positively influenced the gut microbiota, most of you guessed YES.

But the research so far says, not really.

Why could this be?
➡️ Sourdough bread uses microbes but doesn’t actually contain any live microbes when we consume it.
➡️ Most sourdough bread is made with white flour, which is lower in fibre and phytochemicals.
➡️ Sourdough bread is lower in fructans, a fermentable fibre - a characteristic which is great for those with IBS looking to avoid symptoms and enjoy bread (however, there is less fibre for your microbes to consume!)

Researchers speculate that adding things like bran or whole wheat flour to sourdough would boost its positive influence on the gut microbiota, as both are a source of prebiotics!
