Meet Maryam Abro (she/her) — a Registered Provisional Psychologist and the newest member of our therapy team here at Center Street Psychology! ✨

Maryam provides counselling to children (ages 6+), teens, and adults through both in-person sessions in Calgary and virtual sessions across Alberta.

With over five years of experience in private practice, school systems, and community-based mental health work, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a compassionate, collaborative approach to her clients.

Her style? Warm, authentic, and flexible — always meeting clients where they are. Maryam creates safe, nonjudgmental spaces where people can explore pain, heal from trauma, and uncover their own resilience.
She integrates a variety of evidence-based approaches, including EMDR, CBT, IFS, Narrative Therapy, and DBT, tailoring therapy to fit each client’s needs and readiness.
Outside the therapy room, Maryam is passionate about family, creativity, and movement.

She loves spending time with her kids, boxing, high-intensity workouts, unwinding with music, and sharing laughter with friends.

We’re so grateful to have Maryam’s dedication, expertise, and heart on our team. Please join us in giving her the warmest welcome!

The new rules under Alberta’s Education Amendment Act are, in a word, archaic.

Requiring parental consent or government approval before a student can be called by their chosen name, or before a teacher can use resources on gender identity, doesn’t put “students first” — it creates barriers for some of our most vulnerable kids.

At Center Street Psychology, we know identity is not something handed out by a parent or a government. It belongs to the individual.

For young people especially, being affirmed for who they are is linked directly to safety, belonging, and mental health.

When policies strip away affirmation, they put kids at risk. Schools should be safe places to grow into yourself — not environments where your very identity requires permission.

💡 At CSP, we support all people. We are one place for many.

We’ll have more to share on this in the coming weeks. We want you to know you’re supported here at Center Street Psychology.

No government gets to choose your identity. No policy changes who you are.

The recent changes to Alberta’s Education Act — requiring parental notification and consent for pronouns, restricting lessons on gender identity, and demanding ministerial approval for resources — are a step backwards.

While framed as “supporting parents,” these rules risk silencing kids, complicating teachers’ work, and undermining inclusivity in schools. Most importantly, they can leave young people feeling unsafe and unseen.

At Center Street Psychology, we stand with students, teachers, and families who know that identity and mental health are deeply connected. Every child deserves to be called by their name, to be respected for who they are, and to feel safe in their learning environment.

Send this to someone who needs a little reminder today 💛

Taking steps toward a better life isn’t always easy, but it’s always worth it.

Whether it’s reaching out for support, setting boundaries, or practicing a new skill you learned in therapy, every small action counts.

You’re showing up for yourself, even when no one else notices.

That effort matters. That growth matters. And you deserve support, understanding, and the chance to thrive.
