United Nurses of Alberta and Alberta Health Services have agreed to extend the North Zone Locum Program Letter of Understanding until December 31, 2025. The Letter of Understanding had been scheduled to expire on September 25, 2025.

The locum program enables nurses to work for short-term periods of less than 12 months to address high staffing needs in Northern Alberta.

A Letter of Understanding signed in 2022 saw a locum premium of $25 per hour paid to nurses working temporarily in the AHS North Zone. Nurses who accept assignments in rural parts of the region outside the cities of Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray receive an additional $50 per day throughout their locum, whether or not they have a scheduled shift that day. These terms have been extended and will remain in place.

The northern locum program first signed in 2012 focuses on providing RNs and RPNs short-term assignments of less than 12 months to help meet staffing needs in the north. UNA and AHS have recently agreed to expand the program to include the Central and South Zones, with negotiations for the expansion of the program to begin soon.

Online applications for the UNA Nursing Education Scholarships are open and must be completed and submitted by 4:30 p.m. on October 15.

The scholarships are awarded annually to students in their first year of nursing studies in an approved nursing program in Alberta who are related to a UNA member or associate member in good standing.

To complete the apply for the scholarships, applicants must fill out the application form and submit a short essay that answers the question: “How do you think UNA impacts working conditions and patient care?”

United Nurses of Alberta awards up to 15 nursing scholarships of $1,500 each year and one award of $1,500 sponsored by the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions for students enrolled in first-year Registered Nurse- or Registered Psychiatric Nurse-track programs. This scholarship is not intended for postgraduate studies.

Applications for Oct. 1, 2025 to Sept. 30, 2026 permits are now available in College Connect.

As a registrant of the CRNA, you must renew your permit annually to continue to practise in Alberta.

The annual renewal period is now open. Complete your application before the deadline of Sept. 30, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. MDT to renew your permit for the 2025-2026 practice year.

Important: you must complete payment and click the submit button before the deadline.
Begin the renewal process in your College Connect account. Your application will appear after you log in.

If you start your application but do not submit it by the deadline:
-You will be unable to practise in Alberta starting on Oct. 1, 2025
-Your permit status will change to expired (cancelled for non-renewal)
-Your employer will receive a notification of your expired permit status
-You will lose any progress made to your application and will need to begin an entirely new application, known as Return to Practice’

Payment does not equal a permit; you must meet all the requirements and submit an application to receive a permit to practise for the upcoming practice year.

Hello Local 1 Members,

UNA will be participating in the 2025 Calgary Pride Parade on Sunday August 31:

On Pride Day Sunday August 31 -

Please be at the staging area by 1030 AM
Please check in at the volunteer station at the 6th Street Barricade just west of Confluence (purple diamond in the picture). Parade starts at 1100.

If you wish, please wear colourful attire - be it scrubs or everyday wear. Parade theme is “Bursting into Bloom” and the UNA Pride Caucus theme is “We Will Survive”. There will be some water and light snacks provided. You may want to bring additional water for yourself. And don’t forget to apply sunblock! Pets are welcome and need to be on a leash. The parade can be loud and chaotic, so be sure your pet is up for it.

After the parade, UNA will be heading north on 5th Street (keep on the sidewalks please) towards the festival. There will be a Pedal Pub pick up on the corner of 6th St SW and can assist transporting you to the festival grounds. Calgary Pride Parade Coordinators made a fantastic manual.

Hello Local 1 Members,


We will be holding our next member meeting on Wednesday September 3, 2025 at 1630hrs by Zoom. All members must register on DMS to attend this meeting. The registration deadline is end of day on Tuesday September 2, 2025.

We will be holding an election at this meeting to determine who will represent Local 1 at our 2025 AGM in Edmonton as delegates and observers. The election will run from 1700hrs to 1730hrs and you must be present to vote. The election will be electronic and members in attendance will receive an email with a link to vote. If you are unable to attend the whole meeting but want to be there for part of it, feel free to pop on the meeting when you are able. Please note you will still need to sign up for the meeting as your name will need to be preregistered for the voting process.

Hello Local 1 Members,


The deadline is fast approaching to return your nomination forms to the Local 1 Exec with your interest in attending the 2025 UNA Provincial Annual General Meeting. Nomination forms MUST be received by the Local 1 Executive by end of day on Tuesday August 26, 2025.

The event will be held in Edmonton from October 28-30, 2025 (arrival in Edmonton the evening of October 27th, returning late evening on October 30th).

We estimate the Voting Delegate entitlement for Local 1 will be 22 or 23 members, provincially funded. We will be given official notice of the Voting Delegate entitlement for Local 1 on September 12th. This number is based on the percent of the total members who belong to Local 1, such that 1 delegate represents 75 members. Local 1 will also be funding 3 Observers to attend the AGM.

If more members than the delegate entitlement put their name forward to attend, an election will be held to determine who will attend, and if they will attend as a Voting Delegate or an Observer. If an election is required, it will be held at our next Local 1 meeting on Wednesday September 3, 2025.
