UCalgary expert: How to help socially isolated seniors during COVID-19

Mandatory social isolation in the midst of the global COVID-19 crisis is a distressing trial for us all, but the hardships can have an even greater impact on the elderly. What can we do to help them?

Dr. Candace Konnert, PhD, leads the #UCalgary Healthy Aging Lab. “Sometimes it’s as simple as just making a phone call and saying ‘I’m thinking of you,’ ” says Konnert. “Or writing a note of encouragement and sending it in the mail. A small gesture like that goes a long way to lifting one’s spirits.” Read more about what we can do to help the seniors in our families.

Coronavirus: 5 tips for navigating children’s screen time during social distancing

During this pandemic, it is fair to say that pre-COVID-19 family routines may shift, or even completely fall apart! In our new COVID-19 reality, daycare and school are cancelled, parents are working from home and families are engaging in social distancing, leaving no peers for kids to play with.

Are you an academic looking to kill some time? Check out this study that a researcher at Cornell University is doing that invites faculty and students to share stories of how they are living in the COVID era through journaling. You are all welcome to participate—you may even find journaling a helpful way of coping with all the stress.

Learn more below:

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is an historic event of unparalleled proportions. Despite the fact that we are all experiencing it together, each of us have different stories to tell about how it has affected our lives. The “Telling our stories in the age of Covid-19” project was created to give all of us place to go to share our experiences, big and little, to co-create a unique snapshot of life in the time of COVID-19. Not only does it provide a hopefully cathartic outlet for our individual experiences, it will help us all understand what happened and how we might better support people in future pandemics and other disasters.

To join the storytelling project, sign up through the project website, https://www.covid-stories.com/. Once you’ve signed up, you can add journal entries daily or simply as often as you can. The project will continue until it is clear that we are on the other side of this experience. If you are under 18 or if you do not want your entries to appear in a later publications, you can still participate and receive the e-publication we produce when we’re done.
