Introducing Huong! 🐻

We are so happy to introduce the newest member of the Speech Bear team!

Huong completed her Masters of Science in Speech Language Pathology at McGill University.

Huong has worked in research, clinical and leadership roles. Her favourite part of being an SLP is celebrating achievements alongside the children she works with. She highly values collaboration with families and other therapy team members. She believes building trusting relationships with children through child-led and play-based therapy is essential to learning. Growing up as a trilingual, she enjoys exploring how language is intricately interwoven with both culture and identity. She has special interests in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), Down syndrome, bilingual learning, and neurodiversity affirming care.

In her free time, Huong enjoys karaoke, swimming, video games, and travelling. 🎤🌊🎮✈️

"First words" come in different shapes and forms!

When we ask caregivers to estimate the number of words, we aren't always just talking about "words" (in their perfect form). As far as our early communicators are concerned, first words can include actual words, approximations, animal sounds, and more!

Remember: so long as the "word" is...
🐻 produced independently
🐻 intentional
🐻 consistently produced
🐻 in the correct context
..it counts!!

✨ Talking Tip ✨

Match + 1 is one of my favourite strategies to teach parents when supporting their kiddo's language development. In essence, it involves repeating what your child says (Match), and saying it back to them with one additional word (+1), to expand on their phrase!

So, for example, if your kiddo says "Car!", you can add "Blue car!". If your child repeats "Blue car!", you can add "Big, blue car!"

This helps our kiddos learn new words and learn how to combine words! When children hear an expansion of their phrases, they are more likely to imitate them.

Remember:

🐻 Do not pressure your child to repeat you. Follow their lead and meet them where they're at!

🐻 You can add a variety of words (e.g., "Blue car!", "Small car", "Car, please!").

🐻 Try to model grammatical phrases when adding words (e.g., modelling "Blue car!" rather than "Car go!").

Hello everyone!

My name is Theresa and I am the founder of Speech Bear 🐻! A bit about me:

I am a registered speech language pathologist servicing families in Calgary, AB, Canada. I've always loved working with kids and am definitely still a kid at heart. I value making meaningful connections with families and meeting them where they're at to help them reach their communication goals.

My vision for Speech Bear is to provide accessible speech and language services in Alberta through family-centered, culturally-conscious, and play-based therapy.

Fun facts about me:

🐻 Outside of my role as a clinician, I also create aesthetic resources and organizational materials for SLPs (peep my website storefront or TPT!)

🐻 I am bilingual in Vietnamese and English

🐻 When I'm not working, I love rock climbing, karaoke, and spending time with my loved ones (including my twin black cats!)

What counts as a word? Well, to put it simply, anything can--so long as it is:

🐻 Intentional (e.g., child says "wawa" to mean water when they see it)
🐻 Consistent (e.g., child says "wawa" on 3+ occasions when they see water)
🐻 Produced independently (e.g., child says "wawa" on their own)

Words can be real words, close approximations to real words, animal sounds, exclamations, etc.!

A speech sound development chart is one tool which can be used to help us visualize when our kiddos are expected to develop certain sounds! Based on Crow and McLeod (2020), here's a quick reference for the acquisition of English consonants (i.e., the age when 90% of English speaking children produce single sounds at the word level).
