Are you aware of the insidious impact workplace bullying can have on an individual's mental health and overall well-being? It's a pervasive issue that often goes unnoticed or unaddressed, yet its consequences can be devastating.

Workplace bullying not only inflicts emotional wounds but also takes a toll on a worker's sense of self-worth and identity. Constant exposure to hostile behaviours, such as verbal abuse, intimidation, or exclusion, can erode one's confidence and self-esteem, leaving them feeling powerless and isolated.

Moreover, the prolonged stress and anxiety caused by workplace bullying can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout. The relentless pressure to perform in a toxic environment can drain an individual's energy and resilience, making it challenging to cope with everyday tasks and responsibilities. As a result, their mental and physical health may suffer, further exacerbating feelings of despair and hopelessness.

In my journey as a Pakistani woman navigating the world of academia and advocating for my cultural traditions through conference presentations and performances internationally, I've encountered my fair share of burnout. It's not just the workload but the additional layers of navigating systemic biases and stereotypes about Pakistan that compound the exhaustion.

It is a result of these biases that my 10+ years of ethnographic research and analysis that was conducted with the mentorship of a distinguished scholar of South Asian Music: Prof. Regula Burckhardt Qureshi remains unpublished.

I continue to face challenges with toxic editors and peer reviewers who attempt to impose their biases onto my work and insert their viewpoints into my publications so much so that I end up withdrawing it completely.

As an underrepresented identity in many spaces, it's crucial to acknowledge how these factors contribute to burnout and address them collectively.
