Where to begin... Once again wanted to give a giant thank you to the Alberta Children’s Hospital. They have some of the most amazing doctors and surgeons out there who go above and beyond for their patients and their family. The nurses treat your child like their own and make you feel comfortable. The facility is clean and sanitary, especially during a pandemic. Even during these scary times, the staff know how to make parents involved in every step and have embraced the technology to ensure that both parents are ‘present’ and updated. Thank you to Dr. Lopushinsky, Dr. Brindle, Dr. Tito, Dr. Meyer, Dr. Boone and every other fantastic doctor we encountered. To the nurses, thank you! To the volunteers, thank you!
Are you short of PPEs? Can the public donate them to you?

Through a creative and inspiring collaboration, team members from our Alberta Children's Hospital Child Life team, including our horticultural and art therapist, created this beautiful tribute for staff at the hospital.
What a wonderful way to bring in spring and thank our amazing teams for their dedication and hard work throughout our pandemic journey.

On Thursday, April 30th, Alberta Children's Hospital Music Therapist Kim Cooke and Child Life Specialist Kate Ross offered the first online Music Therapy session to outpatient families who are followed by the Rotary Flames House and ASSIST team.

16 families, totaling 22 kids contributed to 30 wonderful minutes of music-making, movement, storybooks, and so much joy! The success of this session has been felt far and wide, and we have received an incredible amount of positive feedback from our families. One parent wrote, “Our kids were engaged and it gave them purpose for the session. They talk about it all the time now. Thank you for the joy that this brought our kiddos during this time of isolation. It meant a lot to them to have music therapy.”

We are so excited to continue offering Music Therapy on this platform on a weekly basis to our families.

Thank you to Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano for recognizing Coty Ong, a registered nurse at Alberta Children's Hospital, and all frontline staff for their hard work and dedication during the Covid-19 response.

Want to visit your child at Alberta Children’s Hospital?

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, Alberta Children’s Hospital is taking additional steps to ensure that those most at risk of contracting the virus are protected.

To ensure the safety and well-being of our patients and staff, please note we only permit one visitor at a time. Other children including siblings or family members under the age of 18 are not allowed to visit at any time.

Please remember that all visitors to Alberta Children’s Hospital must:
• Complete health screening prior to entering the facility, including a temperature check for fever over 38 degrees Celsius and a questionnaire.
• Wear a mask or face covering while inside the facility.
• Be escorted at all times, by the staff of the health care facility, except when with the patient in their room.
• Perform hand hygiene (hand washing and/or use of hand sanitizer) when entering and leaving the facility and when entering and leaving the patient’s room.

Our hospital currently has screeners at the entrance to greet each visitor, conduct health screening and verify any visitor is authorized to visit as per the above guidelines.

If you are unable to visit, please use other methods to be in touch such as a phone call, video calling or use FaceTime.

Thank you for helping keep our patients and care staff healthy.

It’s National Volunteer Week! Thank you to each and every one of our amazing volunteers that helps make every day brighter for our patients, families, staff and physicians. You are our everyday heroes and we appreciate you!

ACH: We're Here For You

As we proactively plan for the anticipated surge in demand for acute care and emergency department (ED) spaces, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is converting the nine beds currently reserved for pediatric ED patients at South Health Campus into adult ED spaces, effective immediately.

Dedicated pediatric ED beds and pediatrician-provided emergency services will now be offered at the Alberta Children’s Hospital only.

As always, all EDs in the Calgary Zone continue to accept both adult and pediatric patients. This change only reduces the number of South Health Campus ED beds specifically allotted for pediatric patients, where children are provided care exclusively through a pediatrician.

For children and teens that require non-emergency medical care, parents are encouraged to call their family physician. To speak to a nurse and receive telephone advice and health information, families can also contact Health Link 24/7, by dialing 811.

[03/24/20]   Visiting a patient at Alberta Children’s Hospital?

Alberta Children’s Hospital will permit one adult at a time to visit any inpatient. Adult family members can rotate in and out throughout the day, and one adult can remain with their child throughout the night.

Any exceptions must be pre-approved by the Unit Manager and will require confirmation through screeners at the front entrance. Exceptional circumstances will be handled on a case by case basis.

Please note, any additional visitors will be turned away at the unit. This includes family members who arrive for visitation or appointments (e.g., second parent, grandparent, siblings). These individuals will not be permitted to enter the hospital site, unless exceptions have been pre-determined.

Additionally, no children will be allowed to visit. This restriction is in place as we know that children do not necessarily show symptoms of COVID-19, and could therefore pose an unknown risk to the health of patients and staff.

Exceptions to this restriction would be considered in certain circumstances, but will require review and approval by a unit manager or nursing staff on a case-by-case basis.

No individual who is ill will be permitted to visit a patient in any AHS facility. This includes patients ill with known or suspected cases of COVID-19, or any other illness.

Visitors must be feeling well on the date/time of visit.

If you visit, check in with nursing staff and follow hand hygiene and cough etiquette.

If you are unable to visit, please use other methods to be in touch with your loved one, such as a phone call, video calling or use FaceTime.

www.albertahealthservices.ca

To ensure the safety of our patients, staff and physicians and protect those at greatest risk of severe illness, Alberta Children's Hospital has taken steps to restrict visitors.

Outpatient appointments: One adult only will be permitted to accompany your child to an appointment. Any exceptions must be pre-approved by the unit manager and will require screeners to confirm the need for two parents to attend.

Siblings will not be permitted to attend. This restriction is in place as we know that children do not necessarily show symptoms of COVID-19, and could therefore pose an unknown risk to the health of other patients and staff.

Please be reassured that no children with confirmed clinic appointments are being turned away without first consulting with the clinic (even when presenting with symptoms).

Santa Visits Alberta Children's Hospital - 2019

“Seeing the joy and happiness on our patient’s faces when they looked outside and saw Santa, Mrs. Claus and their reindeer friends was a magical moment for all of us," says Margaret Fullerton, Senior Operating Officer of Alberta Children’s Hospital. "We look so forward to this heartwarming visit each year.”

Patients, families and staff at the Alberta Children’s Hospital were treated to some early season’s greetings when St. Nick himself brought the festive spirit all the way from the snowy North Pole during his seventh annual holiday visit.

Accompanied by Mrs. Claus and his trusty four-legged sidekicks, the holly, jolly velvet-clad duo paraded around the hospital, spreading joy and cheer to the patients and families spending the holidays in hospital.

“Mrs. Claus and I look so forward to this special holiday visit,” said Santa Claus. “It’s our gift to the patients. Nothing makes our day more than seeing the smiles of the children and how their faces light up when they see us.”

Thank you to our Music Therapy team for sharing some Christmas cheer over the lunch hour. Music therapists Sarah and Marc, along with Music therapy intern Tessa, and Music Therapy Fellow Kim entertained patients and families, and helped deck the halls of the hospital with the festive sounds of the holidays. Thank you to all our generous donors who support the Therapeutic Arts Program at Alberta Children's Hospital. Happy Holidays!

Thank you to the Amica Singers for the amazing performance, and helping spread holiday cheer to our patients and families!

Calgary Flames vs Townsend Tigers

ICYMI: In a showdown of skill, speed and strength, the hockey battle of Calgary played out at the Alberta Children’s Hospital yesterday afternoon with the Townsend Tigers taking on the Calgary Flames at the 39th annual wheelchair hockey game.

Sunday’s forecast was for showers! A downpour of teddy bears flooded the ice at the Saddledome on Sunday afternoon when over 25,000 teddy bears came raining down during the annual Hitmen Teddy Bear Toss. Today, Alberta Children’s Hospital was treated to a visit from the Hitmen, who came to hand out the stuffed bears to patients and families throughout the hospital.

CCAMH Groundbreaking

A new Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health is one step closer to reality as government officials, donors, and partners came together to celebrate an official ground breaking ceremony and kick off to construction. Being built in partnership between Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, the centre will provide young people with new and enhanced services, including a walk-in clinic with specialized triage and the opportunity for immediate referrals to onsite programs. These community-based services will provide youth and their families with care designed to stabilize and manage escalating illness and, ideally, prevent hospitalization. Eight-year-old Perzues gets a little bedside care from a gargantuan green giant, AKA Dr. Anke Banks, during a spooktacular visit at the Alberta Children’s Hospital today.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Rotary Flames House, the Roelofsen family share their story of their young daughter, Thea, who passed away from bone cancer at the facility in 2017. “The team at the House are not about supporting a child to die, but helping a terminally ill child live richly, fully and beautifully until their last breath,” mom Lesley says with daughter Brynn at her side. “We were all cared for in this beautiful space with those who expertly created a sense of security, comfort and love.”
