To the caretaker of a physically/ mentally handicapped women at Chinook mall today who thought it was okay to ignore and physically abuse her client for over 30 mins. It was not okay; what you did was absolutely disgusting and I hope you feel ashamed of yourself. I sat in horror as I watched this “caretaker” abuse and neglect this poor woman’s needs for over 20 minutes before I finally stepped in. The lady was simply asking for some water from her lunch kit and she was clearly incapable of getting it for herself as she was in a wheelchair and was unable to move her arms far enough to grab some water out of her lunch kit. Numerous times I watched her struggle to reach for the lunch kit and each time she was unable to grab it. The caretaker was on the phone and was clearly more invested in her conversation rather then doing her job. The lady in the wheel chair made gestures and noises in order to try and get the caretakers attention and each time was slapped on the hands and told to shut up. I spoke up to the caretaker and told her that the lady in the wheelchair clearly wanted something from her lunch kit and that she needed help. I was met with a glare and watched again as she continued to ignore her client and continued on with her phone conversation. Finally I stepped in and asked the lady in the wheelchair if there was anything I could help her with and moved the the lunch kit closer to her and the lady unzipped it for herself and pulled out the water bottle. The caretaker clearly didn’t like this and put her phone down for the first time in the 30 mins that we sat there eating our lunch watching her do this. She then started cursing at me telling me to get away from them calling me a crazy lady. I calmly explained to her that I was just moving the bag closer to the women so that she could get at whatever it was she wanted in her lunch kit that she was clearly were unable to help her with. Considering the fact she had been ignoring her client for the last 30 plus minutes and she was having a very interesting phone conversation. The caretaker continued to shout at me and yell profanities in my ear as I crouched down beside the lady in the wheel chair and asked if there was anything else I could help her with. She gestured with her hands a thumbs up and I stood up to speak with the caretaker, as she was still being aggressive with me. I explained I simply moved the lunch kit closer to then women because she was to busy on the phone to care about the lady’s needs. She continued swearing and getting mad at me for this and I responded with “I don’t care if you don’t like what I was doing, maybe if you actually did you job rather then talking on the phone the whole time and ignoring her then there wouldn’t be a issue.” She of course responded by telling me I was a rude little girl and I need to leave. And then slapped the hands of the lady in the wheelchair as she was trying to do something with the lunch kit that the caretaker didn’t like. At this point I’m extremely angry and sickened by what this woman is doing to this lady. I calmly walk away and go to a restaurant in the food court and ask for the phone number of mall security and call them and explain what happened. They send a security guard and my father and I explain what has happened, but of course by this time the handicapped lady and her caretaker are gone. The security guard thanks me for informing them of what happened and they walk away to go find the two women. If anyone knows who either of these women are or where the presumed caretaker works please let me know as I would like to file a formal complaint. I would like this story to be made public as possible so that we can catch the women and she can face the consequences of what she did. No person should have to face this neglect especially at the hands of a care taker.

Fundraising for healthcare in Calgary Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, South Health Campus & Carewest.

The incredible generosity of the people in our community has helped to raise more than $395 million for health care since 1996. These funds help advance technologies, programs and services at Foothills Medical Centre, Peter Lougheed Centre, Rockyview General Hospital, Women’s Health, Carewest continuing care centres, community health programs, the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine and other health care organizations in our community. In fiscal year 2011/2012 we received over $9.2 million in donations and our lotteries raised more than $17.5 million. Together with our donors, sponsors and volunteers, we have supported over 380 acute care, community health, women’s health and continuing care programs throughout the city. Over the last 19 years Calgary Health Trust has raised money for many innovations that have pioneered advances in patient focused health care. We remain committed to building excellence in health care as we work closely with Alberta Health Services and community organizations to identify priorities where philanthropic support will continue to have the greatest impact. It is through the dedication of our donors and volunteers that Calgary Health Trust is able to make a significant impact on the lives of many patients, their families and the medical staff in our community.

Mission: Calgary Health Trust is a charitable organization that seeks to inspire passion in people that will transform health care for a better Alberta

Time is running out on this opportunity to make an impact without having to make a financial commitment!

Daddy's Girls: The King's Corner

In celebration of Father's Day, thanks to Shane for sharing your NICU story with us!

As expectant parents to triplets, Shane and Tanya were eagerly anticipating meeting their three daughters at the 34 week gestation milestone; a delivery plan was in place, and a Caesarean section was scheduled in advance, due to the complicated delivery that commonly accompanies the arrival of triplets.
However, at their regular 29 week checkup, the Kings’ medical team became concerned with the growth of Baby A. Tanya was quickly admitted to the Foothills Medical Centre, where the soon-to-be-parents were told to prepare to meet their three daughters any day – weeks before they had anticipated!
