A few years ago, I noticed how we cukturally promote the value of sports for kids.

This is not a bad thing.

But most commonly, adults around those children are in the position of watching the sports or activities, rather than doing the sports or activities.

We purport the importance of it and then fail to provide adult role modelling around it.

Most adults do not do team sports.

Most adults do not do sports of any kind.

When I realized this, I started getting on trampolines and lacing up skates and getting on paddle boards.

Kids who grow up in a world where adults sit and watch sports and recreation don’t learn what it looks like for adults to do sports and recreation.

If you say sports and recreation is an important life skill, what are you personally doing in your life that demonstrates it?

One of the most important offerings in my studio is the Yamuna Body Rolling Table Treatment.

Yamuna Body Rolling is a form of bodywork that combines therapeutic and self-massage techniques using specialized balls.

The treatment focuses on releasing tension, improving alignment, and enhancing body awareness.

However, “Yamuna Body Rolling table treatment” specifically refers to a more passive form of the practice where the individual lies on a table while the therapist uses the balls to target specific areas of tension and misalignment.

It’s designed to provide deep tissue release and realignment in a supported and controlled manner.

And it not only feels like heaven, but it also is one of the most incredible therapeutics on the planet for pain, injury, or preventatives.

As I’m scanning and scrolling through resources….there is an overwhelming volume of information available about health, mental health, nutrition, exercise, sleep, etc.

Yet we are increasingly failing to meet basic health metrics such as daily steps.

Or eating enough vegtables.

Or having basic awareness of our body sensations or capacity to name our emotions.

As commerce invades the health and wellness space, people are increasingly overwhelmed, doing all or nothing or failing to engage in basic practices in favor of catchy concepts or strategies.

Gimmicks or words are not health practices, even if they are health information.

We need to honestly ask ourselves what we are willing to dedicate 5 minutes a day to. Every day.

5 minutes a day all year is 30 hours.

In my own life, I’m dedicating 5 minutes a day to my Yamuna Body Rolling Face Ball (more on that tomorrow). I don’t need an hour, or a 21 day challenge. I don’t need a book or a video or more information.

I need to *do what I know”.

What can you do today that is a 5 minute dedication to consistently doing a simple thing?

A few days into 2024, I’m surprised (but happy) that these are emerging as the best seller of the year. I know that there are 51 weeks to go, but these are dark horses in the Yamuna Body Rolling lineup and I want to cheer them on from the sidelines.

What are they?
Foot Savers re-educate feet. They improve gait, alignment, and muscle tone, stimulate reflexology points, strengthen arches, increase range of motion, and stimulate and elongate the muscles of the calves, thighs, hips, and lower back.

You can also use them on your hands.

What are the benefits?
You’ll feel the blood moving upward, energizing the rest of your body and you’ll be increasing foot flexibility, muscle tone, and strength. Using these is the way to begin your foot work, especially if your feet are sensitive.

Where can I get them?

With a New Year afoot, many dream of a healthier, more vital, more active life.
A barrier many of us don’t even realize exists is that exercise and movement is UNCOMFORTABLE. It hurts, we ache…
And that it’s going to be double, triple, or quadruple the effort to “push through” (if that’s even possible).
How we move load through the body when we push, pull, rotate, lunge, step or move is key.
Two common reasons for pain are: lack of space, and dried up tissues.
Lack of space can be solved by decompression techniques. Hydration can be solved by a focus on facial health (Hylauronic acid).
Another common reason for aches, pains, creaks (etc) is the load getting stuck in tissue rather than moving through the bones.
These are all solve-able issues. But they typically require different solutions than just applying more load, or “getting into shape”. That generally is limited to cardio and strength metrics.
New Year, New You is hard if you feel unprepared. Focusing on body sustainability might actually be your first step!

Health is about having space to execute it. We can’t take our daily steps, exercise or focus on movement when our time is fully allocated.

One of the space clearing exercises I’ve been working on is purging my digital clutter.

I no longer want to be served content from people who self identify as a “public figure,” “content creator”, “or “digital influencer”.

The mission of that content has cleared space to see people I know in real life on my feed again.

I’m marketed to less often, which means my time, emotions and money are more available for my priorities.

If you want to make health, fitness, movement, mental health, or nutrition a priority this year, what can you purge, remove and clear to ensure that you have the space and environment to make that a reality?

I was just reading a post by a woman who said it took her 2 years to clean and organize her house.

We are about to hit a wall of promises of instant results: 21 days and 6 weeks to the body of your dreams.

The lady with her 2 year confessional is right.

Yes, programs and 21 days and 6 week are enticing. We feel like we are about to change ourselves and “kickstart” it.

But we also need to take on something we can continue.

Small steps.

Do 15 minutes of yoga.
Delete 50 emails
Go to bed in time to get 8 hours of sleep
Take your supplements
Get 8,000 steps

Choose one thing, do it for 6-12 weeks and then add another.

When the clock strikes midnight, think about what you want to still be doing in 2026, not what you can promise yourself to do until January 22.

Two years is the goal.

A common question I get is: “do you only teach pilates?”

The answer is: no.

Whether that is a plus or a minus to whomever is asking, I am discipline agnostic.

I am trained in 2 nutrition modalities, 3 mental health modalities, and countless physical movement modalities.

I have this huge arsenal of training and experience because no one technique works for every body, or even every moment of life within the same body.

We are often sold and marketed one technique, one diet, one solution….as if it’s a panacea for all things, all people and all time.

There are only two factors that play into success:

One is what your brain responds to
Two is what your body responds to

Your brain may want to do pilates. But your body might be tired or sore or need some therapeutic interventions first.

My work methodology is always to read the body in front of me, then test and measure.

So you learn to tap into the same resources for yourself.

There is NO magical exercise that delivers results for 80 years of life. We need to be flexible, fluid, dynamic and attentive to what our brain AND body enjoys.

So I teach the technique that the body in my studio most needs that day. I mix and match because movement isn’t about pushing and forcing and using willpower to grit your teeth and get through it.

Some days it might be. But for those of us who are already running at capacity in the other corners of life, it also might not be.

So the answer is: I teach what you need.

What does your body need most today?

One of my biggest goals this year was feeling better. I came into the year exhausted.

I have been reflecting and naming all that I accomplished and all the things that changed. And there is a lengthy list, which seems miraculous.

How did this change happen?

SMALL, replicable steps. I tried one thing that I could repeat every day, and when that was successful, I added another.

Some of the things I tried didn’t stick. For example, I did a sugar cleanse, which I actually liked. But it’s not sustainable to me to live a fruit, grain and sugar free life.

Other things did stick: I took on a program, which I’ve heard described as “hard core”. It wasn’t: I chose yin and outdoor walks as my workouts.

Long term, I set aside some of the elements of the program but what sticks are the daily movements. I do yin absolutely every day for 45 minutes. And I was outside in daily walks most of the year.

I broke down my overwhelming tasks similarly. The path to cleaning out thousands of filed emails was doing a small bit every day.

As we approach 2024, what are your big goals, and how can you break them down into 365 actions?

Today we’re talking about suffering. Such a fun holiday topic, but this time of year we want to feel good and joyful, but often some kind of pain is holding us back. The funny thing is, we accept that pain - physical, emotional or spiritual - as just part of our humanity.

While it’s true, that we do have a “pain body”, we’re not meant to live there. Pain is a messaging system that helps us detect what needs attention so we can tend to it, move along to healing, and get back to feeling good.

Join the conversation with Janis Iseman, owner of My Body Couture, as we talk about full-body sustainability which leads to feeling good nearly all of the time. Hop in and let’s learn how this looks and where to begin.

Gave my body to an exciting study at the University of Calgary this morning. Research on bone health and strength training in women, because not enough research exists specific to women’s health in this area.

I did bone scans on my spine, hip and non-dominant wrist and ankle, followed by exercise tests on balance, non-dominant leg strength, jump balance, walking distance and grip strength.

The study will involve strength training followed by more scans and tests.

I’m excited to get started!

Weekends suck for a lot of people. Sleeping in is bad for your health.

Indulging in alcohol is bad for your health.
Eating at restaurants is bad for your health.
Smoking is bad for your health.
Lazing around the house is bad for your health.

The rhythm of a five day workweek seems inherent to us, but while revelry was seemingly always a part of human culture (there are centuries of evidence), the Ford factory essentially created the modern workweek in 1926.

Prior to that, humans worked up to 100 hours a week.

Our society currently prizes leisure time, and often the emphasis is on leisure.

Many of my clients come to me with sore knees, aching backs, tight hips and other physical annoyances, aches and pains.

And most want to find their leisure time passions with ease again.

Rebel-rousing is usually not on that list, but health is a 7 day a week, 365 day a year venture.

That doesn’t mean abstaining from rest, indulgences or revelry, but it does mean that the modern five day workweek results in more indulgence periods than most of our bodies were exposed to throughout history.

Rather than having seasonal peaks, we have weekly peaks.

Is there an area of your life where you currently could make a small change to indulge less, where it would make a big difference?

We are always looking for “hacks,” tricks, workarounds, quick fixes and 21 day habits. Here’s the truth: you need to sleep, move and eat your veggies. There is no shortcut that is ever going to circumvent the need for the basics. And you can’t jump ahead of that part of the process.
So this is your Sunday reminder:
Eat. Your. Vegetables.

As I reflect on this year: health habits are not a linear line. Not for me and not for any of my clients or students.

I often did actions without “results”.

I had periods where the actions were challenging or didn’t happen, for a variety of reasons.

But there are also marked differences in the 50 weeks I can mentally count between the start of 2023 and now.

As I would recommend to my clients, I have a daily body sustainability practice that helps keep me mobile and pain-free.

I have more energy and vitality than I did when the year began.

What are your health gains in 2023?
