An interesting new study: "Opioids do not relieve acute low back or neck pain in the short term and lead to worse outcomes in the long term."

The article suggests that most cases of acute low back pain will resolve on their own; stating "management is simple ― staying active, avoiding bed rest, and, if necessary, using a heat pack for short-term pain relief." For a little extra help managing pain give acupuncture a try.

The first randomized controlled trial testing the safety and efficacy of opioids for acute back and neck pain shows they are no better than placebo and raise the risk of opioid misuse.

In TCM herbal medicine we learned about the thermal nature, taste and properties of many medicinal compounds. Two that are cooling, salty and help heal broken bones are hijiki and arame. They are varieties of seaweed that are high in calcium and other vitamins essential for healing.

It took a few days to show up, but I now have some crazy colourful bruises. Bruising and swelling are both part of the inflammatory process that accompanies wound healing.

TCM is not a huge proponent of using ice or cold therapy. Cold therapy does help keep the swelling under control and numbs pain. If you choose to use ice, keep the application short and allow plenty of time for the tissues to warm up between applications. Cold therapy reduces inflammation by causing the blood vessels to constrict, reducing blood flow to the area. Tissue healing needs blood and the oxygen and nutrients it carries.

A common topical liniment used in TCM is Zheng Gu Shui. It contains herbs that move blood. I have been applying it as well as doing some super light massage techniques that promote lymphatic drainage. One of the easiest self-care techniques to reduce swelling is to elevate the injuy above the heart. Gravity will help drain the extra fluids.

Research is still being done to determine the exact mechanisms of how acupuncture works in general as well as how it promotes bone healing. Based on animal models it has been found that acupuncture works by: regulating the expression level of cell growth factor, improving local blood circulation, affecting the content of mineral elements in bone, regulating the endocrine system, and promoting the differentiation and proliferation of bone cells.

This acupoint, located just under the head of the fibula (the smaller leg bone on the outside of the leg) is a great one for helping with tendon issues and tight muscles. The translation of its Chinese name is "Influential of Sinew" and is good for treating sinew issues.

Mental illness is a term used to describe mental health conditions that impact mood, thinking, and behavior. These disorders may interfere with a person’s ability to relate to others and function on a daily basis.

Common mental illnesses include:
* Mood disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, etc.)
* Psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, etc.)
* Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, etc.).
