this is april 💐☀️

A month full of changing seasons, different sports, and lots of time spent between arenas, pools, and fields.

✨️ wrapped up hockey season with year-end celebrations and already looking ahead to next season with spring ID camps underway 🏒

✨️ one last workshop weekend in Red Deer to help prep for provincials 💪

✨️ helped my club’s novice team achieve their first basemark-free swim of the season, contributing to the club’s first-ever provincial gold medal 🥇

✨️ experienced our Cirque du Soleil-inspired year-end show, which was such a fun way to wrap up the season 🎪🤸‍♀️

✨️ outdoor sports officially kicked back into full swing with some much-needed warmer weather ⚽️☀️

✨️ lacrosse season started… and arenas without ice still feel weird (and oddly warm) 😂🥍

April was a big transition month, but we’ve settled into the new schedule and are looking forward to more time outside ☀️👟

Why baselines matters more than most people think 👀🧠

Baseline concussion testing helps Athletic Therapists understand what is normal for each athlete. This provides a reference point if a head injury occurs, allowing us to guide assessment and support a recovery that is specific to the individual.

This is especially important for athletes who may already experience symptoms in daily life due to ADHD, learning disabilities, migraines, psychiatric conditions, or sleep issues. Without a baseline, it can be harder to determine what “recovered” actually looks like for that athlete.

Results from baseline testing help identify what areas may be affected after a concussion and guide individualized rehab and recovery planning. They also provide a consistent way to track recovery over time and support safer return-to-sport decisions, helping athletes return to school, sport and daily life more confidently and safely.

Mild errors on concussion testing (such as balance challenges or difficulty with dual-task activities) may be seen in younger athletes as part of normal development. Without a baseline for comparison over time, it becomes harder to confidently interpret what is truly “normal” for that individual, which may influence return-to-sport decisions.

In the absence of a baseline and proper return-to-play progression, athletes may be cleared based on general norms rather than their own true function, which can increase the risk of returning to sport too early.

(a little late on this one… needed a minute to recover from the chaos of last month 😅)

A whirlwind month of sports, travel, and new opportunities across a lot of different settings.

✨️ Hockey playoffs in full swing, celebrating wins, losses, and everything in between 🏒

✨️ Flexibility & mobility workshop in Red Deer, along with technical work in the pool 🏊‍♀️

✨️ court sports took off this month! From covering Basketball Provincials here in Calgary to supporting Canadian U12 athletes at Tennis Nationals 🏀🎾

✨️ wrapped up indoor soccer & futsal, looking forward to shifting outside in the next few months ⚽️☀️

✨️ busy days in the clinic helping athletes transition between seasons, recover from playoffs, and prepare for what’s next 💪

🐶 plus we have a new fluffy face around the clinic! Our receptionist’s puppy has been popping in as our little door greeter and emotional support pup 😍

March was busy and a little chaotic, but full of growth and rewarding moments.

April feels like a bit of a reset as schedules shift, but there’s lots ahead with new sports and upcoming field opportunities 👀🔥
