I am currently reading a book called “Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life’”. The book focuses on the habits, lifestyle, practices and mindset of those who have lived the longest.
One chapter is about movement, of course. It states that those who live the longest are not the ones who do the most exercise, but those who move the most.
Walking and gardening are two big parts of these peoples’ lives.
Additionally, disciplines that work to bring mind, body and soul into balance are often a daily part of life for those who live the longest.
Yoga is one of those disciplines.
Yoga – along with other, similar movement practices – help practitioners maintain strength, balance, mobility and alignment.
It is gentle but not simple.
Intense but not exhausting.
Meditative but not boring.
How well it protects our aging bodies is one thing, but it’s also so good for our mind. And our spirit.
Through yoga I find calm, I find quiet, I find focus and I find peace.
Having a regular yoga practice is a healthy addition to anyone’s life.
The quote at the start of the book – a Japanese proverb - says it best “only staying active will make you want to live a hundred years.”
If you want to live to a hundred or beyond, you will want to still be strong and mobile. Move your body. Come see me for some yoga!
