Congratulations to those who are living examples that long term recovery from the illness of addiction is possible.

Two years ago YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) announced that we would be funding more beds at Fresh Start Recovery Centre. Before that announcement, Fresh Start only had funding for one of their 50 beds. Today, 30 of fresh starts beds are fully funded, and they are supporting over 100 Albertans every year to build a better life.

The Recovery-Oriented System of Care that we're building centers so much around community. We're proud to partner with community non-profits like Fresh Start Recovery Centre to provide life saving treatment and recovery services for all Albertans.
Thank you to Fresh Start Recovery Centre for the tour and sharing their story with a group of us yesterday. And thank you for everything you’re doing for our community.
For the past 25 years, Glori Meldrum, our CEO, has handpicked thoughtful gifts for our clients, but this year, she's giving the gift of compassion on their behalf. We're happy to share we've donated funds toward Fresh Start Recovery Centre's annual team retreat to support the people who support our community. ❤️ Check out the amazing work they're doing!

Hayley’s group volunteered and gave back to the community as part of their Step 12 today. The group chose Lethbridge Animal Shelter as the organization they wanted to support. The group provided love and enrichment to the animals by getting them out of their cages and taking them on walks and engaging in play with them. This helps improve the wellbeing of our furry friends as much as it brings joy to the humans.

Donate now to 30 years of Gratitude. | Fresh Start Recovery

One day, one week, and one year at a time, Fresh Start Recovery Centre has reached a significant milestone – We celebrate our 30th anniversary with you. We thank everyone who has supported our organization and contributed to our impact over the last three decades, one person at a time…

Over the last 30 years, Fresh Start has grown and evolved from a small organization in the south part of Calgary to a community serving clients from across Alberta, the NWT and other parts of Canada. We now provide treatment and post-treatment services at a number of facilities in Calgary and Lethbridge.

In our first 30 years, Fresh Start has helped tens of thousands of people – including people directly affected by addiction who are now on their journey of recovery and encompassing countless family members, employers, friends and community members who have also been impacted.

We have done this with the support of hundreds of individuals, foundations, companies and government sources. We are eternally grateful for the generous support of our community!

To celebrate our 30th Anniversary, Fresh Start Recovery Centre is launching a fundraising campaign with a goal of raising $500,000. The best way to celebrate our history is to set our compass on the future, and we are already looking ahead to our 50th anniversary. Achieving our $500,000 goal will get us started on the next 20 years of providing life-changing service to people affected by addiction.

We ask all of our supporters to help us celebrate our first 30 years by giving $30…$300…$3,000…$30,000…
Every gift will help us toward our Vision of “Every individual, recovery for life” and Mission of recovering lives by housing, treating and supporting people affected by addiction.

We have received a very generous matching pledge of $200,000 from the Matt Rumpel Family Foundation, Lexus of Calgary, Stampede Toyota, Charlesglen Toyota, Cochrane Toyota, and Lexus of Royal Oak. All donations to the campaign up to the first $200,000 will be matched dollar for dollar.

We humbly thank you for believing, supporting and contributing to our course in the days, weeks, and years to come.

Grassroots recovery camp hopes to continue supports into winter - Lethbridge |

The Kii Maa Pii Pii Tsin (Kindness to Others) Renewal and Healing Centre has reached the end of its pilot funding, but is looking to continue supporting addiction recovery among the vulnerable population.

The recovery camp, located on the Blood Tribe not far from Lethbridge, Alta., is run by Alvin Mills and a handful of staff, and uses Blackfoot principles for healing, including a sweat lodge and tipi.

Mills had been supporting the vulnerable population in the area for several years before opening his camp. This summer, participants stayed outdoors in tents.

“The concept behind the recovery camp is you get away from all of the distractions here in the city,” he explained.

The camp opened in August 2022, receiving around $120,000 in funding through a provincial grant distributed by the City of Lethbridge’s Community Social Development department.

According to Mills, the initial funding ran out at the end of September, leaving them looking for other supports. The camp saw more than 40 people access its services, with the last participant leaving in mid-October.

“Now with the winter months closing in, I’ve had individuals express support so trailers could go down at the recovery camp so we could extend it to a winter camp,” Mills said, but added nothing is set in stone just yet.

The money would go toward things like food supplies, propane, and other necessities.

Additionally, Mills has received support in writing from the Blood Tribe Department of Health to assist with referrals and transfers to the Kainai Healing Lodge and Bringing the Spirit Home detox facility.

“Our ultimate goal is to get them sober with medications supporting their withdrawals and their opioid use disorder,” explained Levitee nurse Whittny Schuurman.

“(Transportation is) a huge problem we face with other people who aren’t at the recovery camp, and having him help them with that would potentially bring more sobriety along the way.”

For now, Mills is continuing to offer a helping hand in Lethbridge by handing out bagged lunches and warm clothes.

With the cold weather inevitably sticking around for the next few months, he encouraged the community to consider doing the same.

Princess of Wales: Addiction a 'serious health condition' and ' not a choice'

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has urged people suffering addictions to not feel shame and look for help.

Kate, patron of addiction recovery charity The Forward Trust, said addiction was “a serious health condition” and “not a choice”.

Her message of support for the Taking Action on Addiction campaign was released on video for the start of Addiction Awareness Week.

“Addiction is a serious mental health condition that can happen to anyone, no matter what age, gender, race or nationality,” she said.

“As patron of The Forward Trust, I have met many people who have suffered from the effects of addiction.

“Attitudes to addiction are changing. But we are not there yet, and we need to be. Still the shame of addiction is stopping people and families asking for help and people are still tragically losing their lives.”

The Forward Trust’s campaign hopes to reframe perceptions of addiction, build awareness of the causes and nature of addiction, improve understanding, reduce prejudice and enable more people to get help.

“We as a society need to recognise that the only way to help those suffering is to try to understand what has led them to addiction, to empathise with them and to be compassionate to their struggles,” Kate said.

“And so today, during Addiction Awareness Week, I want to share a message of support to those who are continuing to suffer.

“Please know that addiction is not a choice. No one chooses to become an addict.

“I want you to know that this is also a serious health condition. Please do not let shame hold you back from getting the help you so desperately need.

“The charities leading the Taking Action on Addiction Campaign, along with others, are working across the country delivering life-changing work to help people recover and move forward.

“They are here for you. So please ask for help. I know this was not a choice. Recovery is possible.”

In the video, Kate appears to be speaking from home as she sits on a sofa with framed family photographs behind her.

Mike Trace, chief executive of The Forward Trust, said: “Addiction Awareness Week speaks directly to people affected by addiction, offering support and understanding so that more people ask for and receive help.

“At a time when addiction is growing across the UK, it is crucial we build awareness of its causes and act quickly to stop this tide, to get in early to reduce the impact on families and children, and make sure that people are able to access the support and treatment that we know makes recovery from addiction possible.”

Just one short week after being sworn into the new role, Minister Nicholas Milliken of the newly formed Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction came to visit Fresh Start Recovery. He and his team have been determinedly engaged during their first days in studying and exploring the intricacies of Alberta’s addiction care system, including prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery services. Our Executive Director Bruce Holstead and Director of Operations Jennifer Kent-Charpentier provided the Minister’s office with a tour of the facility. Much time was spent with him and his team, conversing and sharing experiences and exploring the needs of Albertans seeking recovery. We are always appreciative of the commitment and the increased support and concern this government provides in Housing, Treating and Supporting people affected by addiction and helping break down the barriers to treatment, increasing its accessibility to all Albertans.
