Want to get even more out of your therapy sessions—especially if you’re new to this? Here are two simple ways to make the most of your experience:

1️⃣ Come with an open mind and remember that therapy is a safe space to explore whatever is on your heart and mind—there’s no pressure to have all the answers.

2️⃣ Be honest about how you’re feeling, even if it feels vulnerable. Sharing openly helps build trust and supports a meaningful therapeutic relationship.

By trying these, you’ll create a foundation for a respectful and collaborative therapy experience that honors your unique journey.

Indigenous communities have always shown incredible resilience in the face of adversity—honouring traditions, protecting the land, and nurturing future generations. This month, let’s celebrate the strength, wisdom, and ongoing presence of Indigenous peoples. Their stories inspire hope and remind us that resilience is not just about surviving, but about thriving and reclaiming culture, language, and identity.

How Can You Find Out Whose Land You’re On?

If you want to learn about the Indigenous territories, treaties, and communities where you live or work, here are some helpful resources:

Native Land Digital (native-land.ca):
An interactive map where you can enter your address to discover the Indigenous nations, languages, and treaties connected to your location.

Whose Land (whose.land):
A web-based app with maps and videos to help users identify Indigenous Nations, territories, and treaties across Canada.

Local Indigenous organizations and knowledge holders:
Whenever possible, connect directly with local Indigenous communities or organizations for guidance on respectful land acknowledgement and to learn more about local history and protocols.

Municipal and institutional resources:
Many cities, schools, and organizations now provide information about the traditional territories they occupy, often on their websites or at public events.

Making Land Acknowledgements Meaningful
A land acknowledgement is most powerful when it is personal, thoughtful, and connected to ongoing action. Please consider:

Naming the territory and Indigenous peoples connected to the land. If you are unfamiliar with pronunciation, please reach out for clarification and PRACTICE until it becomes more familiar to you.

Reflecting on your own relationship to the land and your responsibilities.

Committing to ongoing learning and support for Indigenous communities.

Connecting the acknowledgement to the purpose of your gathering or work.

Land acknowledgements are a small but important step in the journey to reconciliation—honouring the land, Indigenous presence, and the truth of our shared history, as called for by the TRC and Indigenous leaders

Why Do Land Acknowledgements Exist?

Land acknowledgements are a meaningful act of reconciliation that recognize the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples and honour their enduring relationship with the land. While this practice has existed within Indigenous communities for generations, it has become more common in public and institutional spaces in Canada following the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) 94 Calls to Action.

The TRC was established to document the experiences and impacts of residential schools on Indigenous individuals and communities. Its final report highlighted the loss of identity, culture, and land that resulted from colonization and the residential school system. Although land acknowledgements are not specifically listed among the TRC’s Calls to Action, they have emerged as a visible and accessible first step towards reconciliation, reminding us of our responsibilities to each other, to the land, and to future generations.

Land acknowledgements serve several important purposes:

Recognize the traditional and ongoing stewardship of Indigenous peoples over the land.

Counter the erasure of Indigenous histories and rights by naming the nations who have always called these lands home.

Promote truth, healing, and reconciliation by acknowledging the impacts of colonization and committing to meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities.

Support the spirit of the TRC’s Calls to Action by encouraging education, reflection, and action among all Canadians.

The TRC, Reconciliation, and Land Acknowledgements

The TRC’s Calls to Action urge Canadians to learn about the true history of Indigenous peoples, the legacy of residential schools, and the importance of treaties and Indigenous rights. For example, Call to Action #92 asks organizations and businesses to build respectful relationships with Indigenous peoples and to provide education about Indigenous history, treaties, and rights. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls also calls on Canadians to “decolonize by learning the true history of Canada and Indigenous history in your local area,” including acknowledging the land and its importance to Indigenous communities.

Land acknowledgements are a way for individuals and organizations to publicly recognize these histories and take a small but significant step towards reconciliation. They are most meaningful when paired with ongoing learning and actions that support Indigenous sovereignty and well-being.

What is it? Why does it matter?

June is Indigenous History Month—a time to honour the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. Established in 2009 and officially renamed in 2017, this month invites everyone to learn, reflect, and celebrate Indigenous resilience and wisdom.

Indigenous History Month is important for healing and reconciliation. It creates space to recognize the impacts of colonization, residential schools, and ongoing injustices, while also uplifting Indigenous voices, traditions, and achievements. By learning about Indigenous histories and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives, we can all play a role in building respectful relationships and a more just future.

You can participate by attending local events, reading books by Indigenous authors, supporting Indigenous artists and businesses, and taking time to learn about the land you live on. Every action, big or small, helps move us towards understanding, respect, and meaningful reconciliation.

Fridays are for curling up with a warm cup of tea and taking a moment to reflect on a week well spent. It's the one day that I get to wake up slow. It’s the perfect time to get lost in a good book or spend some quiet moments tending to my garden as a way to wind down.

For me, sipping tea, reading, and starting my garden are all little rituals that help me recharge and get ready for the weekend ahead.
