From first words to first stories—watching your child find their voice is an exciting journey!
Communication is about connection. As your little one grows, their ways to communicate and connect with others expand from using simple gestures to complex storytelling. Here is a look at a few of the exciting milestones we look for for early language development:
🌱 Age 1:
•First words begin to emerge
•Imitating sounds, words, and your daily actions
•Following simple, 1-step directions (like “get the ball”).
🌿 Age 2:
•Spoken vocabulary of 50+ words (often hitting 200-300!)
•Starting to bridge words into short, 2-word phrases
•Following 2-step directions (e.g., “pick up the shoe and put it by the door”)
🌳 Age 3:
•A spoken vocabulary of at least 250 words (averaging 1,000+)
•Sentences getting longer (3-4 words)
•Growing understanding of location words (under, together) and “Wh-“ questions
🌸Age 4:
•Spoken vocabulary growing into the thousands
•Longer, more grammatically correct sentences
•Telling more imaginative stories
☀️Remember: Every child’s path is unique. These milestones are “checkpoints,” not a race. If you ever have questions about your child’s specific journey, we’re here to help you navigate it with confidence.
