Many people struggle to get enough sleep, an important function for promoting good health and mental performance. It can be hard to find an effective treatment to support a healthy sleep, but CBD may be an effective alternative to synthetic sleep aids. CB2 is a type of cannabinoid receptor found predominantly in the body, but they also exist in the brain. Thus, CBD can elicit psychological and neurological effects – such as feelings of calm which can promote sleep. Since CBD can reduce anxiety CBD may help limit the mental barriers that can make it difficult to relax and fall asleep. However, the fact that CBD can reduce anxiety does not mean that it will induce sleep. Some users report that they have to take large doses of CBD (between 100 and 300mg) but there are many variables that impact sleep, and this kind of dose may not be effective for everyone – or it may even elicit unwanted side effects. If you’re thinking of using CBD for sleep, it might be helpful to seek the advice of your doctor or budtender to support you.

Many sources within the cannabis community posit that the effects of CBD can be magnified and enhanced when combined with THC. Sometimes, this is referred to as the entourage effect – an effect that enhances both CBD and THC. For this reason, CBD isolates have been on their way out. However, a recently published study has found that the entourage effect may not be all that effective. The study found that those who took CBD with THC experienced greater side effects, such as dry eyes, feeling sick, and cognitive difficulties. Researchers hypothesized that these effects were due to the interaction between CBD and THC, given that CBD appeared to inhibit the metabolism of some pharmacokinetics (e.g., Δ9-THC) which elevated their plasma levels relative to those who took THC alone, increasing the adverse effects of THC. However, there are only a few studies that have explored the acute interaction of CBD and THC so it is hard to be certain that the interaction will always be negative – or won’t sometimes be effective.

(2/2) Last week we discussed how some people report gaining negative side-effects to ma*****na use over time, however, we don’t know yet what causes this change. One solution, as we mentioned last week, was to avoid overconsumption. One strategy is to micro-dose. Micro-dosing consists of consuming small doses of ma*****na (around 2-3mg) as needed throughout the day. Others suggest that exploring various profiles and strains of THC could be effective. For instance, terpenes work together in different ways to provide varying effects. Additionally, it’s usually higher levels of THC that tend to result in this shift of effect. Thus, it could be a matter of finding a ma*****na profile that interacts better with their biology. Some individuals have done their own research into what solves the problem for them. This tends to involve keeping track of how you feel when taking different products, trying different strains, or using different modes of consumption. If ma*****na has been working for you, but seems to have taken a negative turn, it may be worth it to do some experimentation with how you take it. As always, it’s best to consult with your physician first before making significant changes.

(1/2) Many people enjoy the therapeutic benefits of medical ma*****na. However, some individuals have reported that a switch happens where it goes from treating their symptoms effectively to causing them terrible side-effects like paranoia. However, while reported by many, this switch is understudied by researchers. There are some predictions that have emerged, suggesting that the change could be psychological in nature, such that smoking ma*****na becomes associated with the anxiousness that precedes cannabis use. The issue with this hypothesis is that not everyone who becomes intolerant to ma*****na uses it alleviate anxiety. A different hypothesis is that overuse of cannabis can lead to addiction – at which point, it is no longer medicating it is merely making it more difficult to respond to your internal signals and you become dependent on cannabis to respond. Thus, those looking to revamp their relationship with ma*****na would benefit from taking a tolerance break of at least one month. If you continue to feel cravings and other signs of addiction, or continue to suffer with harmful side-effects, it may be time to seek a new approach to treatment.

Have you heard of CBDA? It’s actually the state that CBD exists in prior to decarboxylation where CBD is heated and prepared for consumption, activating the h**p compounds. Traditionally, cannabinoids contain an extra carboxyl ring or group (COOH) on their chemical chain. For h**p to have the effect that we know it to have today, it has to be heated and decarboxylated. However, new research suggests that CBDA may have benefits of its own. For instance, CBDA inhibits COX-2, just like Advil or Tylenol. This suggests that CBDA may actually be a better pain reliever than CBD. In addition, animal studies have demonstrated that CBDA may be more effective at minimizing nausea. This new research suggests that depending on what you are looking to use CBD for, CBDA may actually be a better alternative.

Recent reports from the U.S. Depart of Justice (DOJ) have noted that in the past 5 years, the number of cannabis-related offences has dropped by over 60%. Additionally, imprisonment for cannabis related offences has taken a sharp decline, with all imprisonments related to drug offences falling by 24%. However, many continue to note that much of federal arrests are a result of the War on Drugs – accounting for nearly half of those in Federal prison. Since 2012, mandatory minimum policies have changed the landscape of drug charges. While these statistics are a relief to many cannabis users, it is important to note that at the Federal level, most charges are related to drug trafficking. In contrast, many arrests continue to occur at the state level. At the state level, many are serving lengthy sentences for consuming products that others (including the state) can now profit from. However, declines in Federal incarceration rates are still a good sign that the States is moving toward cannabis prohibition. The gist of many arguments is that, really, no one should be sentenced to time over non-violent cannabis charges.

Do you struggle with high blood pressure? Research suggests that there is a positive correlation between CBD consumption and reductions in blood pressure. Researchers found that there is a connection between catestatin peptides, elicited by the sympatho chromaffin system, and CBD. CBD appears to dampen activation of the sympatho-chromaffin system and therefore, decrease the secretion of catestatin peptides. Catestatin peptides inhibit the sympathetic nervous system and increase blood pressure. Participants who were taking CBD (225mg-450mg depending on weight and s*x over 5 weeks) showed decreased blood pressure and lower levels of catestatin peptides than those who took the placebo. If you struggle with hypertension and are thinking of CBD, ensure that you check with your physician about taking CBD to treat yourself before you try it. There may be more effective solutions that they can suggest, especially since we don’t know yet exactly how much CBD should be prescribed.

The popularity of CBD has increased exponentially in the past decade, but research has failed to keep up with demand. New research has found that CBD passes through the placental barrier in expecting mothers. CBD accumulates in the fetal brain and can cause damage to the fetus. High doses of CBD consumed during pregnancy have been shown to impair the development of the pre-frontal cortex and problem-solving abilities in female rat offspring. However, it appears that the impact of CBD on fetal development is s*x dependent such that females tend to face cognitive impairments and males tend to suffer increased pain sensitivity. There are several reasons that this research is important. First, many women suffer with nausea during pregnancy and may use CBD to alleviate this symptom. This is especially true now that CBD has become legalized federally, making it available at convenience stores and grocery stores. Physicians need to begin asking pregnant women about their CBD consumption and inform them of potential risks. Future research will attempt to determine whether the timing of CBD consumption at different trimesters impact the severity of impairments.

In one of our last articles, we mentioned how Mechoulam and his team discovered a cluster of fatty acid compounds in the brain called the FAAAs. Mechoulam suggests that insights into individual personality types and temperaments could be explained by subtle differences in FAAAs given that they cause nuanced differences in the central nervous system. Thus, the levels of FAAAs as a group, and variability in them individually may enforce an infinite number of different outcomes among people. These compounds likely have
important biochemical effects that could help us predict the emergence of different disorders, diseases, and vulnerabilities. For instance, a compound called oleoyl serine is considered to be anti-osteoporotic, and another compound called arachidonoyl serine can lower the impact of damage caused by traumatic head injuries. Mechoulam’s research has given rise to the notion of an “endocannabinoidome” which is an updated version of the existing endocannabinoid system that encompasses these kinds of important fatty acids, anandamide, and 2-AG. Mechoulam contends that if we continue to encounter these nuanced differences and can code them in a reliable way, we may have the chance to make some major advances in molecular psychology.

Last week we talked about Raphael Mechoulam and the important discoveries him and his research team have made about CBD. Initially, Mechoulam was envisioning a rapid lift off from these initial discoveries given the wide variety of therapeutic applications that CBD was capable of. However, research and clinical studies were quickly halted due to strict drag laws around the world. While THC activates CB1 and CB2 receptors, when THC binds to CB2 receptors it does not elicit any psychoactive effects since CB2 receptors do not accumulate in the brain, but it does cause a psychoactive effect when it binds to CB1 (a receptor in the central nervous system). Thus, research began to focus on how to utilize the healing effects of cannabis while bypassing the psychoactive high that comes from stimulating CB1 receptors. This is an especially desirable facet of research given that CB2 receptors are found in many important areas across the body meaning that its signalling causes a cascade of profound metabolic, psychiatric, autoimmune, and neurocognitive therapeutic effects. Stay tuned for more information about where research in this area is headed.

In 2012, CBD was virtually unheard of among the general public; however, Raphael Mechoulam and his research partner were already exploring the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, analgesic, and anticonvulsant properties of CBD in the 1960s. In 1962, Mechoulam began his investigation into the chemical makeup of cannabis and just one year later Mechoulam and his lab partner Yuval Shvo published the molecular structure of CBD. Then, in 1963, Mechoulam and Shvo identified the molecular structure of THC. These two discoveries led Mechoulam to map the body’s endocannabinoid system and its connection to the chemical use and production of chemicals similar to that of THC and CBD. Mechoulam and his research team were also responsible for the discovery of the compound anandamide which we have discussed before in previous posts. In 1995, shortly after the discovery of anandamide, Mechoulam’s team identified another compound, 2-AG, which is partially responsible for regulating many physiological processes such as pain perception, mood, appetite, and immune function. So what’s next for Mechoulam and his team? He suggests three areas that research should aim to assess in the future including the CBD2 cannabinoid receptor, a cluster of fatty acid compounds known as FAAAs, and CBD. Stay tuned next week for more information Mechoulam’s work and the future of CBD research.

Dr. Annabelle Manalo-Morgan is an up and coming advocate for the use of cannabis in the holistic treatment of medical conditions. Her son, Macario, was born into a medical emergency, suffering a stroke and up to 500 seizures a day. While doctors searched desperately for something to help Macario’s symptoms, they were still empty handed 5 weeks later. At this time, Macario withstood a 9-hour surgery where surgeons removed 38% of his brain. It was predicted that Macario would be paralyzed on the right half of his body, progressing no more than a newborn baby at 6 months old. After battling with her dad through his stage 4 cancer diagnosis, Dr. Manalo-Morgan was no stranger to thinking outside the box for personalized treatment plans. She claims that she wants to know more than how to treat something, but why that treatment works. Thus, when it came to her son’s condition, she began to use her intuition and knowledge about cannabis to treat him. Growing her own cannabis, she began to treat Macario’s condition. Within 2 days, Macario showed incredible signs of improvement. His eyes began to move, he began to crawl, and within a year he was walking. Today, at 7 years old, Macario has no special needs despite missing 38% of his brain! This goes to show the incredible capacity of the brain to rewire and compensate for damages, as well as the importance of relying on holistic lines of treatment to approach the disorders that harm us. With her work already making waves, it’ll be exciting to see what Dr. Manalo-Morgan does next.
