After 5 crazy years Jennifer has recently been diagnosed with Lupus. Jagged, porous, weathered and worn
Waiting for my turn,
To feel the earth move beneath my feet
Smooth my edges, fill my holes
And let me declare defeat

There is no passageway for me,
no one to guide me into the sea
To taste the salt, to feel the grit
I thought for sure that this must be it

I was promised a new beginning,
I just had to wait
Being stuck in this broken body,
is it just my fate?

I could not accept that this must be all
I made it through winter, spring, summer and fall

This can not be it for me
Please, come and take me
out to the sea.

WOW Wednesday!

Our next nomination is Adam Janes

Adam Janes and his family moved back to their hometown of Carbonear in August 2020. Adam not only wanted to open a massage therapy clinic in his hometown he also wanted a platform that he could use to support the community, especially athletes, as he knows the challenges that come with athlete development, especially in a rural community.

In the fall of 2023 Adam partnered with Carbonear Academy and launched the Play Ball: Softball and Baseball Development Program. Play Ball is a program that focuses on teaching youth the fundamentals of softball/baseball, in a fun and supportive environment. It takes place Sundays for three hours at Carbonear Academy. Adam’s goal for this program is to provide youth in our larger community the opportunity to develop leadership and teamwork skills, participate in physical activity and socialize with their peers in a supportive and positive environment.

In an effort to overcome challenges to participation in sport there is no fee to register for the program, if a participant does not have the necessary equipment, it will be provided for them and, the program is led completely by volunteers.

The second season of Play Ball has 72 youth registered from ages 6 – 14 years and representing 13 communities! The program has several parents/guardians that volunteer their time in addition to two local superstar softball players: Emily Underhay and Adrian Green!

Our Play Ball Team is growing, and we are so excited! We would like to introduce a new member, Adrian Green! Adrian will be volunteering his time to the program when he has the availability! Check out Adrian's awesome journey in our post!

We are so fortunate to have both Adrian and Emily share their skills, knowledge and passion for the sport!

It was our goal to start a community-based program at the grassroots level and ALL of our wonderful volunteers (parents and guardians too) are key to accomplishing this goal!!

We're so grateful for the intertest in the Play Ball program! We have 68 youth registered, from ages 6 - 14 years and have participants from some amazing neighbouring communities.

We are so fortunate to be able to provide the youth of these communities the opportunity to participate in a FREE program that promotes healthy lifestyles, skill development, leadership, being part of a team, and positive social interactions with their peers!

Our goal with the Play Ball program was to do our part in minimizing the challenges for participation in organized sport and recreational opportunities. To provide youth and their caregivers the opportunity to have a positive experience in a supportive environment.

We are grateful for the volunteers that help lead the program with Adam. We want to give a shout out to Emily Underhay, for joining us and sharing her awesomeness with the participants! Huge thank you to Carbonear Academy for their continued support!

We are happy to announce that the Play Ball: Softball & Baseball Development program, supported by JC Massage Therapy LTD, is ready for the 2025 season!

Play Ball provides youth the opportunity to experience the sport, develop their leadership skills and be part of a team all while being led by someone who truly values all of the above and has so much passion for the sport!

This program was designed to minimize the barriers of accessing sport; therefore, there is no fee to participate, no skill level required, and equipment is provided.

We are truly grateful for all our clients in the JCMT community, the amazing small businesses that surround us and the continuous support from our family and friends. Without this support these community initiatives would not be possible, so bravo to you!

The article in this post is just a small glimpse into the amazing person Adam is, a “soft spoken, modest” one, in what was just the beginning of his life in this great sport. More importantly it paints the picture as to why Adam has chosen the profession he has. The kindness and empathy he shows his clients, and the huge smile on his face for the three hours he gets to “play ball” on Sundays with some pretty amazing youth pretty much sums up the type of person that he is.
