Below, read the poem that inspired Jennifer’s piece:
“A Promise of New Beginnings”
by Jennifer Janes, 2025
Jagged, porous, weathered and worn
Waiting for my turn,
To feel the earth move beneath my feet
Smooth my edges, fill my holes
And let me declare defeat
There is no passageway for me,
no one to guide me into the sea
To taste the salt, to feel the grit
I thought for sure that this must be it
I was promised a new beginning,
I just had to wait
Being stuck in this broken body,
is it just my fate?
I could not accept that this must be all
I made it through winter, spring, summer and fall
This can not be it for me
Please, come and take me
out to the sea.
Let’s raise awareness through art, story, and connection.
