A reintroduction for any new faces. My name is Carmen, and I am a Certified Childbirth Educator in the Fraser Valley. I began my journey into birth, supporting a friend at the tender age of 18. Following the birth of my son, I took a comprehensive community support program that allowed me to assist at risk pregnant women. After the birth of my daughter, I became a Certified Birth Doula, where I supported more families than I can count. I transitioned into teaching by creating the Birth Doula Studies Online program via the College of the Rockies. I also served on a panel through BC Women's Hospital as both someone who experienced postpartum adjustment and as a birth professional. This team of doctors, midwives, nurses, and allied professionals collaborated to bring to light the issues that can arise postpartum. Following the birth of my 3rd child, a daughter, who was born not alive, I became a credentialed bereavement doula. I hung up my doula hat several years ago, but that hasn't diminished my passion for supporting families. As a childbirth educator, I strive to offer compassionate, evidence based, affordable, personalized prenatal education. My classes are a favorite. I attribute that to truly caring for each family individually. There is no judgment.
I am booking both primary and refresher classes ongoing.

Alittle humour to lighten your day. But also true! You can't shock me. No, really. Tell me anything. Send your photos and ask your questions. I honestly don't mind.
My clients know that they can reach out anytime, and there's no TMI.
In addition to past work as a doula for 20 years, I have worked in community and residential healthcare. Your body functions pics and questions safe with me 😉

If you didn't catch Part 1, please check out my first live with Linnea Hu RMT, where we discussed the circle of support, her pregnancy, and the role of allied health care professionals.
Part 2 is on Linnea's birth and postpartum.
Expect some beautiful moments with this amazing woman, along with some of her unexpected moments (everyone is ok).
It's important that we as a village share not only the beauty of birth but how to navigate when things do not go as planned.
I am sure it will be raw, but full of wisdom.

See you Wednesday July 30th at 10am

Did you know that you can transform your labour room? Some people feel that they don't care and will just labour in whatever room they get. But from a biological standpoint, the atmosphere matters. When our space is fluorescent lighting, dominated by necessary equipment and not at all like home, it tells our brains that we are not safe. This can cause us to be tight, tense and reduce the flow of oxytocin. Even with the best support, it's shown that dim soft lighting, comfort items, music, pleasant scents, and familiar focus tools make a huge difference. Don't be afraid to go a little crazy. Bring the twinkle lights, the flameless candles and some of your favorite massage oils. Put on your music, pack some yummy snacks and get your labour on!

Summer heat can be annoying for a pregnant person. With the increased blood volume and swelling feet, it can be more than uncomfortable. Stay safe in the heat. Stay hydrated, seek out cool places, and put your feet up. Be on the lookout for any excessive swelling, rapid heart rate, or clammy pale skin. If you have any unusual symptoms, please let your healthcare provider know.

I love birth stories. All types. I'm so privileged to have the best clients and form relationships. All of their journeys are different. Some more difficult than others. All are special. This couple showed such strength and resilience from the start. We carefully explored each element of the class but tailored it in a way that worked for them. They had all of the information yet still kept their focus on what they wanted. We watched language and kept it in a perspective that empowered them. They knew what they wanted, and they did it! So proud when a mama listens to herself. Along with her amazing husband, midwives, and doula, a memorable birth was had.

My personal story

I attended my first birth at the age of 18. This set me on a path of curiosity surrounding birth at a time when choice was not always forefront for birthing families. After the birth of my son, I felt I needed to do something that would empower women to have an experience that was better than mine. I enrolled in an intensive Community Birth Program that allowed me to specialize in the support and education of marginalized families. Later I heard there was a name for what I was doing. “Doula.” I then had my daughter and chose to go back to further educate myself. After completing a certification program, I went on to support well over 100 women in their births. When attending births came to a crossroads due to life circumstances, I felt a need to continue my work, though in a slightly different arena. After continuing my education, and at the request of my former doula clients, I began teaching Childbirth Education. There appeared to be alot of options for group classes, but not many for the busy families that may not have the want or need for a group class. So began Chilliwack Private In Home Prenatal Classes (now Chilliwack and Agassiz Private In Home Prenatal Classes). I also provide postpartum doula services and lactation support as requested. Throughout this journey I have lost 2 babies of my own. Through my healing I chose to complete my certification as a birth and bereavement doula. With this I have expanded to peer support via Meadow’s Bridge.

I look forward to educating new families. Contact me to discuss your personalized education plan today.
