Measles Alert: there is a measles outbreak in British Columbia. Measles is one of the most infectious diseases we know of, it is highly contagious. The complications of measles can be severe, including encephalitis (brain swelling), immune suppression, blindness, pneumonia, febrile seizures, or death.

This is a plea to ensure you, your family, and your children are vaccinated. Serious side effects of vaccines are rare, and happen at a far less common rate than they occur from measles infection.

Symptoms of measles include red, runny eyes, nasal congestion, cough, and a rash that begins on the face and neck. If you think you have been exposed to measles and are developing symptoms, call 811. If you are coming to hospital or clinic because you think you have measles, please wear a mask and remain outdoors until you are brought in to your room to help reduce the chance of spread.

Update 10:30am: Clinic closed for day Aug 22

We have been advised through EOC at District of Clearwater that power is not expected to return until at least 2:30pm. As such, the clinic will remain closed for today. Anyone who had appointments booked today will be called as soon as possible once power is restored to be rebooked. Please do not call or leave messages for this for at least 24hrs - our staff will be reaching out to you directly.

Dr Helmcken Hospital ER will be on diversion (temporary closure) from 6pm to 7am nightly starting Aug 3 until Aug 8. 24hr service is planned to resume Aug 8 at 7am.
Please consider what is an EMERGENCY vs an urgency or a convenience.

As you've likely seen, Clearwater ER is on diversion (temporary ER closure) tonight July 26 until 7am July 27. We here in Clearwater, as well as many other communities in BC and Canada, are CRITICALLY short on RN staff. We are doing absolutely everything we can to move shifts, pull coverage from other areas, and have locum nurses come in to cover. But everyone is trying to recruit and pull the same small pool of trained staff.

Unfortunately, we need to be prepared that this will be reality for an unpredictable length of time. We can anticipate more closures due to lack of available staff.

Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. Be safe in driving and recreation. Book early to see your family doctor clinic for prescription refills, health checkups, and follow up on tests you've had. Call 811 for minor complaints (yes, we know the wait there is long too).

I cannot stress enough that everyone who works in health care here WANTS OUR HOSPITAL OPEN. This is our community, our friends, and our families being affected too. We continue to beg your patience and kindness in this time of crisis.
