Psychologists and pediatric neuroscientists agree that the single most harmful habit in a baby’s first year is chronic unresponsiveness to distress, often described as repeatedly letting a baby cry for long periods without comfort. MRI studies on infant brain development show that when a baby’s stress signals go unanswered again and again, cortisol levels rise and begin to affect the growth of the limbic system, the region responsible for emotional safety, trust formation, and long term stress regulation.

This does not refer to brief crying or normal daily challenges. Instead, research focuses on patterns where a baby’s emotional needs are consistently overlooked. Studies from major developmental labs show that lack of responsive caregiving disrupts neural wiring in the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, shaping how the child will process fear, connection, and emotional resilience later in life.

Experts stress that babies are biologically wired to expect comfort. Responsive caregiving strengthens emotional security, lowers stress hormones, builds healthy attachment, and supports stronger cognitive outcomes. The goal is not perfection but presence. Simple acts like picking up a crying baby, making eye contact, or soothing during stress create powerful protective effects on the developing brain.

Understanding this helps parents shift from pressure to connection and gives babies the emotional foundation they need for life.

Another gift idea for your expecting family or friends in 2026, a Doula!

I do Doula for a Day packages or Birth/Postpartum support.

Just one of those gifts we didn't know we needed until we wish we'd had our care ❣️

Doula for a Day is a service that’s ideal as a gift at a baby shower, a donation, or even as part of an auction. It can also be a way to see if I’m the right fit to support a birthing p…

Fun FREE event coming to Northumberland Breastfeeding families!!!

You’re Invited toThe Great Canadian LLLatch-On in Port Hope!

We are excited to invite you to join us for the Great Canadian LLLatch-On, hosted by La Leche League Canada Cobourg-Northumberland group, happening on Friday October 3rd at the Port Hope Public Library.

Our event will include:

● Family-friendly activities such as colouring tables, story time, information and a few giveaways
● An opportunity to connect with other parents, supporters, and community members who value breastfeeding and family support.

This is a free event, open to everyone; parents, babies, siblings, grandparents, and supporters.

We’d love for you to be part of this coast-to-coast celebration!

A village can do both but without support for the mother, both may struggle more in their journey together 💓

Did you know that when I began this journey and I had to brand myself and create my business, our instructors asked us to come up with a BHAG (a term coined by Jim Collins and Jerry Pollas) which means a Big Hairy Audacious Goal...

So I thought it thru long and hard and came to this - if at the end of my work life I could say that I've "held all the babies in Northumberland" then that is what my BHAG would be. Because passionately I knew that if I have held all the babies, imagine all those parents that I have supported in my time as a Doula??? That, is pure magic to me!!

And then Dou North came to me, with the tag line Northumberlands Maternal Doula. Dou North also metaphors somewhat directional and my core goals are to listen to the families I am with, hear their own instincts, build their confidence and help guide them to trust who they are as a parent as they are the BEST person for their child. As well as support them to get there healthily, heard, validated and cared for.

What an incredible role I have right??!! How incredibly lucky am I that families trust me to be present at their birth, bearing witness to their most vulnerable space and then welcome me into their home and trust me to care for them as essentially a stranger (tho I make sure they get to know me pretty quick when we meet lol!).... Let me shout it to the Northumberland Hills, I could not be more honored than to be this for them and I hope it has conveyed as we have spent our time together. I truly love this path that I am on.
Thank you 💗

This is another graphic novel that I am deeply fond of AND got to do a virtual author talk with Myriam a few years ago for the Port Hope Public Library before I worked there and became a Doula!!!
This is an important and valuable read 💗 also, easy read with the cool graphics, and also - depicts very real images to some very hard to express thoughts and feelings.

How blessed I was this whole year to have been invited into the lives of the families who trusted me to support and care for them thru their birth or postpartum journey.
I was gifted this beautiful ornament and bling by one of my earlier this year birth families, and the words strike every chord in my body and to my bones.
They say you need to do things outside of your work that bring you joy, to keep you balanced.... How incredible that I get to do many things that bring me joy, that are also my work - I can't think of any other things that could make me happier!!!
Merry Christmas everyone 🎄🎁💗
