Veterans, Comox Valley community leaders, and businesses came together for VinoSpa Speaks Out: A Veteran’s Perspective at 40 Knots Winery
yesterday. The sold out audience heard stories and learned of the challenges faced by families and veterans as they transition back to civilian life

Sergeant Major Tim Turner provided an emotional first hand account of his military experiences and “civilian translator’ Karen Turner shared her intense and sometimes funny life with her ’soldier husband’. Comox Valley RCMP Cpl. Tori Cliffe and Sergeant Mike Rude of The Rude Awakening Tour joined our panel to provide a broader perspective

It was a very impactful, emotional day with a little dash of humour. Funds raised were donated to the Operation Pegasus Foundation, and tandem parachute jumps were donated and auctioned

That’s it for VinoSpa Speaks Out 2023. Speakers and charities for the 2024 series are being finalized! We will share those plans shortly so you can schedule those dates in your calendar

For many of us, this is a reality that we will never know. Join us on Wednesday, November 1st as we welcome keynote speaker, Veteran Sergeant Major Tim (Gunny) Turner, and our incredible guest panelists Karen Turner and Cpl. Tori Cliffe

Although there are many resources available to assist in the transition to civilian life, there are still those lost in our community who continue to suffer from mental and physical illnesses that often lead to an inability to cope in society and homelessness. It is estimated that over 90% of those who served as military and first responders suffer from a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, resulting in an inability to seek out and use these resources

-Glory Bowl: Roasted sweet potato
tossed in a fig balsamic and fresh basil dressing, beet and barley goat feta salad with RAD Farms mixed sprouts, toasted seeds with multi-coloured carrot ribbons, shredded cabbage, garam masala chickpeas with chimichurri, all served on a bed of warm coconut rice

Introducing our Integrated Health Advisor, Michel Duhaime! We are looking forward to having him join us for VinoSpa Speaks Out: A Veteran’s Perspective

Michel’s work history is a little eclectic. He began his career as an aircraft maintenance engineer with the Canadian military in Shearwater, NS, and then as an assistant professor of Chemical Engineering at the Royal Military College in Canada

Michel eventually carved an entirely different path in the study of Western herbal medicine, shiatsu, Ki Aikido, and ultimately Chinese medicine and most recently medical Qi Gong

As an acupuncturist, Michel has also embraced other healing philosophies including Esoteric Acupuncture, transformational medicine, Emotional Freedom Technique, Psychology of Vision and, most recently, Inner Bonding. His practice focuses on the integration of Body and Heart-Mind as an entry point into the subconscious where the roots of chronic pain and illness are located.

Michel has been practicing locally as a registered acupuncturist since 2001 and medical Qigong since 2012. He is currently enrolled as a candidate for a Doctorate in medical Qigong and just began training to become an Inner Bonding facilitator

We're pleased to announce that Cpl. Tori Cliffe will be joining us again as a panelist at the November 1st VinoSpa Speaks Out! 🇨🇦

Cpl. Victoria (Tori) Cliffe has just commenced her 34th year as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is a third-generation police officer. She is currently posted to the Comox Valley RCMP Detachment where she is the NCO in Charge of Client Services. In this position, she is responsible for external partnerships with local agencies and community groups, and oversees Comox Valley Media relations, School Liaison and Community Policing

Cpl. Cliffe has worked all over Canada in different units including under cover, VIP, uniform policing, and the International Police Task Force for the UN deployed to Bosnia. Cpl. Cliffe has spent most of her career in General Duty Policing; specifically, working with Indigenous Communities. Cpl. Cliffe is currently the K’omoks First Nation Liaison Member and her personal focus is working with at-risk youth

Meet VinoSpa Speaks Out Panelist Karen Turner - Military Spouse & Civilian Interpreter

Karen Turner is a proud Canadian Military Spouse of 40 years, and the proud mother of a Canadian Infantry Soldier and Search and Rescue Technician. She kept the home fires burning for both of her soldiers through natural disasters at home and 7 tours of war abroad

Karen is a survivor of childhood trauma and was both a student of child psychology and teacher to young developing minds. She is a mental health advocate to military, police, and first responder veterans. In 2012 His Honour Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Lt Colonel Don Ethel awarded her the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her support of military veterans

She is a friend and supporter to the serving and retired men, women and widows of the Queens Own Rifles of Canada, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, Loyal Edmonton Regiment, Alberta Sheriff’s Branch and Executive Protection Unit, 413 Search and Rescue Squadron 14 Wing Greenwood and 442 Search and Rescue Squadron and School 19 Wing Comox

Proudly introducing our keynote speaker for VinoSpa Speaks Out… Sgt. Tim Turner!

Turner joined the Canadian Army in 1985 and was a member of 2 Commando the Canadian Airborne Regiment, Pathfinder platoon, the Canadian Forces Parachute Team “The Sky Hawks” and Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He has served in peacekeeping missions to Cyprus and Croatia and has served in war time operations in Afghanistan, the Middle East, and West Africa. Master Warrant Officer Turner’s specialty within the Army was as a master sniper, reconnaissance and military freefall. He and his sniper partner won the International Combat Sniper Competition in 1997

Turner retired from the regular force as a MWO in 2008, joined the Alberta Sheriffs and transferred to the Reserves. During 9 years in executive protection, he protected Premiers Redford, Hancock, Prentice, Notley, and Kenney. He had the privilege to deploy to, China, Japan, India, the UK, Switzerland, Germany and all over Canada and the USA

MWO Turner has a son who also served 2 tours in Afghanistan as a sniper with the PPCLI and is now a Search and Rescue Instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Force. MWO (Retd) Turner has now fully retired and is 1 of 3 Directors with the Operation Pegasus Jump Foundation

To provide a personal perspective and insights, we have invited decorated Veteran Sergeant Major Tim (Gunny) Turner to share his story as a Canadian soldier and the impact his experiences have on his life and his family

Turner continues his service today with veterans and first responders as a Director with Operation Pegasus Jump Foundation

The event will also have a panel of specialists including Cpl. Victoria (Tori) Cliffe of the RCMP and Canadian military spouse Karen Turner. This panel will offer insights to their experience working with these veterans, resources available and answer your questions on how we, as a community, can support those who served
