June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day, and Carefor recognizes it as an opportunity to honour the past and present contributions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

As an agency which provides care and support from the border of Algonquin Park to Quebec, Carefor not only operates on the unceded traditional territory of many Indigenous Peoples but we are also made up of and support a wide range of Indigenous Peoples, each with their own unique and rich cultures and history.

As a healthcare organization, we recognize the damage that has been done to Indigenous Peoples throughout Canada's history, which is still being felt, and we are committed to being part of the solution towards building a country and community where everyone feels equally respected and supported.

Today is World Elder Abuse Prevention Day.

Elder abuse—whether financial, emotional, physical, sexual, or neglect—is a growing concern across Ontario. The Elder Abuse Prevention Network reports that as many as 1 in 5 older adults in Ontario will experience some form of abuse in their lifetime. Financial abuse—often perpetrated by someone known to the victim—remains the most frequently reported form of abuse, representing over 60% of cases reported to community agencies. However, only 1 in 24 cases is reported, making it a hidden crisis in many communities.

With elder abuse on the rise, many seniors in our community are facing abuse everyday.

We at Carefor are so fortunately to have over 450 Personal Support Workers and Community Care Workers who provide nearly 600,000 hours of care each year that impact their clients, families and communities.
