It is very important to maintain a positive outlook for pain management, for both clinical outcomes and perception. This study showed that when people catastrophize their pain it leads to lack of movement and interest in daily life, leading to the worsening of their condition.

In this way, "I can't stand the pain anymore", or "I will never feel better" acts as a self-fulfilling prophesy.

Catastrophizing one's pain early in the day can kick-start a vicious cycle of avoiding exercise, sitting too much, and having even more catastrophic thoughts the following day.
