Recovery isn’t a solo act. It’s a community. A network. A new way of being supported and seen.

Social recovery capital refers to the relationships, community ties, and support systems that help someone stay grounded in recovery. The more we’re supported, the more resilient we become.

Surround yourself with people who see your worth, speak your truth, and walk the path beside you.

"80% of parents in addiction recovery say that sobriety deepened their emotional bond with their children." ❤️ (Journal of Child and Family Studies, 2022)

But recovery looks different for everyone. For some, it’s about rebuilding relationships. For others, it’s learning to heal, even when some connections remain broken. Sobriety isn’t a promise that everything will be perfect—it’s a chance to show up, grow, and find peace in the journey. Wherever you are in your recovery, your story matters. 💙✨

🚀 The Revival of Peer Support and Community-Based Recovery 🌱

The addiction recovery landscape is evolving, with comprehensive models like Recovery-Oriented Systems of Care (ROSC) and women-specific initiatives such as She Recovers leading the way! From Recovery Day to the provincially recognized SOBERFEST, these movements are breaking stigma, fostering connection, and celebrating multiple pathways to healing. 🙌✨

While we have made great strides, there is still much work to be done. True change takes time, and the journey toward a more inclusive and accessible recovery system is ongoing. However, by celebrating small victories and recognizing the strength of those driving these initiatives, we stay inspired and committed to progress. As lived experience continues to shape policy, treatment, and advocacy, we are witnessing a shift towards inclusive, holistic, and community-driven recovery. Let’s build a future where recovery is not just possible but accessible, embraced, and supported by all. 💙

We spend so much time replaying the past and worrying about the future that we forget the only moment we truly have is now. The mind clings to old wounds, regrets, and what-ifs, or it races ahead, creating fears about things that haven’t even happened. But right here, in this very moment, there can be peace.

Recovery, healing, and transformation don’t happen in yesterday’s pain or tomorrow’s uncertainty. They happen in the choices we make right now—in the breath we take, in the kindness we offer ourselves, in the small, courageous steps we choose to take.

So take a deep breath. Let go of what was. Trust that what’s ahead will unfold as it should. And focus on this moment, because it is the only one that truly exists.

Reflecting on my 18 years in recovery, I am beyond grateful for the expansion of knowledge and innovation within the mental health and addiction treatment field. I was fortunate enough to be one of the first alumni of a treatment center that began focusing on building post-treatment services. At the time, these services were limited on Vancouver Island and across Canada, so my aftercare involved living with a fellow alumna. I owe so much to this woman for her support during that critical phase of my recovery.

My recovery has been shaped by many people and programs, including 12-Step and other mutual support groups, as well as family and continuing care programs. Watching post-treatment services evolve into a cornerstone of care—and witnessing alumni associations grow into dynamic communities of courage and integrity—has been one of the greatest blessings of my recovery journey.

Today, as part of The Healing Institute, I am privileged to see this same system of continuing care and alumni networks start to develop. It’s inspiring to see how these programs create a ripple effect, providing individuals with the tools to sustain their recovery while empowering others to do the same. Recovery is not just about overcoming addiction; it’s about creating a life of purpose and connection.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.
