This is their story:
Gord McDonald was born and raised in Cranbrook. He was born into a big family, being the youngest of twelve children. He continued to make Cranbrook his home as he married the love of his life Cheryl. Gord and Cheryl have raised three children, Leslie (John), Dana (Chad) and Josh (Haley). Hearing the laughter of his three grandchildren, Isaac, Madison and Jordan has been the greatest joy of Gord’s life. In September 2014 Gord developed flu- like symptoms that persisted for weeks. When the Cranbrook hospital was not able to deliver any definitive diagnosis due to the inability to get accurate readings from his blood work, they sent him to the Calgary Foothills Hospital. Gord has gone through blood transfusions, biopsies and numerous other tests trying to get to the bottom of his ailments. When he was admitted in Calgary his organs were enlarged and he had hepatitis and a general weakness of his immune system. They are doing further testing for HLH and AA. HLH - Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis is a rare condition in adults which does not allow the body’s immune system to function normally. Certain white blood cells attack other blood cells causing organs to enlarge. AA – Aplastic Anemia is a disease in which the bone marrow, and the blood stem cells that reside there, are damaged. This causes a deficiency of all three blood types. The family hopes that a final diagnosis will be soon made so that Gord may begin his long road to recovery. Gord had the pleasure of operating his own renovation business. However now he has no current means of income or disability to rely on. Cheryl, his loving wife has also lost her job recently due to her time away to spend with Gord. And of course the bills are piling up
