Do people get traumatized over “small stuff like that”?

You may think everyone’s childhood was like that. That it’s normal and you had a normal childhood. That means it wasn’t traumatic.

However, trauma is an internal experience. Not something external.

Rationally, you may try to downplay or ignore it because you don’t want to experience the shame and the uncomfortable sensations in your body that arise when you think about it.

There are obvious causes of trauma. War, physical assault, major car accidents, the things that “make sense to be traumatized by”. So we shouldn’t be traumatized by such little stuff that pales logically in comparison.

But the thing is, the body isnt logic. Logic doesn’t apply here. The body responds to whatever it perceives as a threat to survival, a threat to love and connection.

So there are less obvious causes of trauma.

• dental / medical procedures
• living in poverty
• having to take care of a parent as a child
• having to take care of siblings as a child
• a humiliating experience at school
• growing up in a home where a parent has mental health challenges
• growing up with parents who fail to notice or respond enough/appropriately to your feelings
• seeing or hearing s*x as a child even if it was a mistake or unintentional
• systemic racism
• having a sick sibling / parent
• abruptly changing schools
• repeated verbal threats or shaming
• trauma passed on from previous generations

And so many other things.
Anything that is PERCEIVED as a threat.

Your experience is valid. You are valid.

Next time you’re feeling an intense emotion - anger, sadness, frustration, joy, excitement- try bringing your awareness to the sensations in your body and where they’re located.

This practice helps to manage the intensity of what you are feeling and also stops you from spiraling into unhelpful thought loops.

The felt sense vocabulary below can be helpful for identifying what’s happening in your body.

But the key is to bring your awareness back to *feeling* the sensation in your body and having patience with however it moves or changes or remains.

This sensory awareness practice is offered as gentle invitation to support your connection with your body and present-moment experience.

Please know that everyone’s nervous system has its own pace and boundaries. While many find such practices grounding and nourishing, they may stir discomfort or memories for some—especially if you have experienced trauma.

You are always the expert of your own experience. You are encouraged to move slowly. If anything feels too overwhelming, it’s okay to stop. Listening to your body is the practice.
