It's a justifiable medical intervention, often met with little opposition, when individuals experiencing mental health crises that lead to self-harm or harm to others are admitted to psychiatric hospitals. This perspective is deeply informed by the experiences of countless parents who have tragically lost children, despite their desperate efforts to prevent such an outcome. As a frontline worker and addictions counselor with years of lived experience, I have personally witnessed the devastating transformations of individuals, once full of potential, who become incapable of making life-saving decisions due to their addiction crisis. I recall the profound grief of parents mourning children whose capacity for rational thought was tragically eroded and not a thing I could do or say would change that.

This is not a punitive measure but a necessary medical response. It is crucial to understand this distinction and engage in thorough research before forming opinions.
Consider the thousands of individuals experiencing homelessness and grappling with severe addiction, often unable to prioritize basic needs like shelter and food over their substance use needs. The common refrain, "They need to decide to help themselves," overlooks the reality that their capacity for such decisions is often severely compromised and in so many, incapable.

I speak from personal experience. I was once the individual scavenging for sustenance and injecting substances to numb the pain of a traumatic past. I also bore witness to the loss of my younger sister to similar circumstances at a young age. Without intervention in my own life, I would not be alive today, as my ability to recognize or respond to the imminence of death was absent.

My intention here is not to seek social connections or engage in debate, but to share my deeply held beliefs rooted in factual observations and the profound losses I have personally witnessed. Only those who have held a young person in their final moments, knowing that life has slipped away, or who have faced distraught families desperately seeking reassurance that they did everything possible, can truly speak to the complexities of individual decision-making in such heart wrenching conversations.

This is an opportunity for collective human compassion, a chance to extend ourselves for the singular gift of life. For those who are deceased, all rights cease to exist.

Because of a humanitarian response in my own life and many others I personally know today. These little ones won't have to scream and shed tears in my coffin, and that is the right of the little ones we brought into this world to not be left alone and abandoned where the intergenerational cycle continues.

Today our team members were invited to be part of the announcement for Albertas new "Compassionate Intervention Act." Here we sat in the Gallery of the 1st session of assembly and witnessed action being taken by our Government to save lives, and to help the ones that are just not capable to make any kind of decision, other then the one that's been slowly killing them. Now families can do this for them and get them to the place they want to get back to, but just can't get there on their own.
A life saving tool of compassion and intervention to help awaken our lost ones and bring them back into the light, and bring them home.
