Intergenerational trauma among Indigenous populations manifests not only in psychological and social realms but also biologically. Neuroimaging studies reveal trauma survivors have alterations in the amygdala—key in emotional regulation and threat detection—often resulting in changes to overall reactivity, including higher levels of cortisol. Elevated maternal cortisol levels resulting from chronic stress can cross the placental barrier during pregnancy, influencing fetal brain development and HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis regulation. These prenatal exposures contribute to altered stress responsivity of the fetus and increased vulnerability to mental health challenges in subsequent generations.

This biological embedding of trauma underscores the importance of trauma-informed and culturally-grounded interventions that address both historical and ongoing effects of colonial violence.

Healing from trauma is a sacred journey—one rooted in reconnecting with culture, community, and the land.

For Indigenous peoples, healing is not just an individual process but a collective one that honours ancestral knowledge and shared resilience. Recognizing and supporting these connections is essential in fostering mental health and cultural strength.

We encourage our community to commit to listening, learning, and uplifting Indigenous voices and healing practices today and every day.
