❕Have you taken a good look at your babies head yet?!❕Starting within the first month of life, parents should be monitoring their babies heads for the development of any flat spots!

🧐The best way to take a look at your babies head is from the top down using their nose as a reference (Birds Eye View). If you notice any flattening on either side (asymmetry) or widening of the sides and flattening on the back then it’s time to call up your local peds physio! If caught early these flat spots resolve fantastically with physiotherapy treatment but if caught late (after 6 months) the odds of full resolution reduce significantly and that’s when devices such as helmets become the best form of treatment depending on the severity.

🩵 Our advice? Start checking your babies heads early and if you have concerns don’t wait and see - seek a professional assessment by a pediatric physiotherapist as soon as you notice something!

Here’s what this fantastic family had to say about their experience with our PT Nicole:

“Nicole is amazing. She came to assess my 5-month-olds milestone progress and head shape, and gave us a thorough plan to get him on track. She is detailed, professional, and gentle. She was wonderful at explaining what she was doing and why, and made sure I understood his exercises and stretches. I would 100% recommend booking with Stork Mobile Physiotherapy”

👶 Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT) affects 4-16% of newborns, often earliest identified due to a visible head tilt or turn preference due to neck muscle tightness or imbalance.

🔍Without targeted intervention, CMT is unlikely to resolve on its own and early intervention significantly improves outcomes. According to the updated 2024 American Physical Therapy Association’s clinical practice guidelines, early referral to physiotherapy helps significantly reduce treatment time, lowers the risk of needing surgical intervention, and prevents complications like craniofacial asymmetry.

⭐️ Good outcomes for torticollis are defined in the clinical practice guidelines as: no head tilt, greater than 100 degrees of passive cervical rotation, and greater than 65 degrees of passive cervical lateral flexion

🩵 Torticollis does not only include muscle tightness fully preventing baby from looking to one side but also muscle weakness. If a baby in your life has a preference, don’t wait and see if it corrects! The earlier it’s caught, the easier and quicker it is to fully resolve. Have questions? Shoot us a message!

🍼 Did you know Torticollis impacts more than just your babies neck mobility? Asymmetrical neck tightness or weakness can also play large roll in your babies ability to comfortably and successfully breast feed due to positioning difficulties, decreased sucking capacity, and limited endurance.

🩺 While torticollis should always be assessed and treated by a physiotherapist trained to work with infants, we are only one part of the team! Breast feeding concerns are best assessed by a licensed lactation specialist or breast feeding medicine doctor. There are so many amazing supports available to our Edmonton community and if you have questions about these resources don’t hesitate to reach out!
