Members of the Rotary Club of Edmonton West spent Saturday volunteering at Chrysalis, helping brighten up the hallway with a fresh coat of paint. It was wonderful to see our volunteers come together to give the space a clean, welcoming update for the people Chrysalis supports every day.

Chrysalis is a non-profit organization that supports individuals with disabilities by providing employment, community connection, and life skills opportunities. We are proud to support the important work they do in our community.

A big thank you to everyone who gave their time, energy, and painting skills to make a difference! 🎨👏

Our Members spent time volunteering at the local food bank, giving back to our community in a hands-on way. We sorted donations, which is our favourite thing to do. It reminds us how important it is to support those facing food insecurity.

We’re proud to be part of a community that comes together to make a difference. Small acts of service can have a big impact—and we’re always grateful for the opportunity to help.

Thank you to everyone who attended our National Volunteer Week Open House last Tuesday. We had a great time! Our volunteers are amazing, and we are so grateful for what they do here at Boyle Street.

We also want to thank our community artists who shared and sold their art at our Artist Market, as well as Lena Daniels (Lena Daniels Music), who shared her songs with us. Art in every form is critical to a strong, healthy community.

Volunteers support our programs and many of our events by showing up with a willingness to be part of something larger than themselves. Boyle Street would not be Boyle Street without its entire community: those we serve, staff, supporters, and our volunteers.

Environmental sustainability is a growing priority for Rotary International and its members around the world. Recognizing that healthy ecosystems are essential to thriving communities, Rotary added the environment as one of its key areas of focus—encouraging clubs to take action on issues like climate change, conservation, and pollution.

From local tree-planting initiatives and river cleanups to global projects that protect water sources and promote sustainable agriculture, Rotarians are turning awareness into action. These efforts not only improve natural spaces but also support public health, biodiversity, and long-term community resilience.

The Rotary Club of Edmonton West continues to lead by example—partnering with Root for Trees to plant native trees and shrubs, helping expand our urban canopy and strengthen the health of our local environment. In addition, the club proudly cares for a 3 km stretch of Highway 16 through the Adopt a Highway program. We participate in regular litter cleanup efforts, contributing to a cleaner and more welcoming community.

By working together, we can make a meaningful impact today and help ensure a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations.

Together, we are people of action—protecting our planet, one project at a time. 🌱

❤️🍽️ Giving back, one meal at a time

A group of Edmonton West Rotarians had the privilege of volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House, preparing and serving dinner for families staying at the Edmonton House.

It was an afternoon filled with teamwork and laughter, as we prepared the meal. For families going through challenging times, a warm, home-cooked meal can mean so much—and we were honoured to be part of that comfort.

A special thank you to Fred for the delicious recipe, that helped make the meal extra special! 👨‍🍳

Service Above Self in action. 💛

With heartfelt thanks to Dr. Ben Doz, Marley, and our incredible team, we have successfully completed five and a half days of clinics in Guatemala. They lead with kindness, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to serving the Guatemalan people.

Together, we were able to make a meaningful impact:
• 1,006 patients seen in the eye clinic by Drs. Ben Doz and Geraldine Solorzano
• 220 reading glasses distributed
• 278 prescription glasses ordered (to be made in Edmonton and delivered)
• 232 patients seen by family physician Dr. Pierre-Charles Gretillat
• 90 patients attended group health sessions
• 24 cataract surgeries completed by Drs. Javier and Fatima Marroquin
• 36 pterygium surgeries performed by Dr. Jennifer Hodges and her assistant, Nurse Marlin Sanchez Gonzales.
• 416 patients treated by our chiropractor, Dr. Roman Bayrock, and physiotherapist, Tracy Solorzano
• 200 patients cared for by Dr. Alphonso Ibarra in the dental clinic

This was a deeply impactful mission, made possible by so many people. To Janice Hengsbach for organizing all the medical equipment for the trip. We are especially grateful to the Marroquin and Solorzano families for organizing the clinics, providing meals, and arranging accommodations for such a large team. Thanks to Miguel for organizing and sponsoring accommodation and transportation for the team. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Barillas for your support throughout the week, and to our incredible interpreters who bridged languages from local dialects to Spanish to English. Thank you to Phil Wong, Brian Bennett, Cathy Anderson, Ryan McRitchie and the Optometrists Clinic for supplies and glasses that were donated to the patients.

To our volunteer team from Edmonton West—your long hours, dedication, and passion for helping others made all the difference.

And to the people of San Rafael: thank you for your patience, your warmth, and your gratitude. We are truly honored to have met you, learned from your culture, and experienced your beautiful country.

We look forward to returning next year. 💙
