Fun fact: treadmills weren’t originally designed for fitness.

They were actually developed as a form of punishment and hard labor.

Back in the early 1800s, prison inmates were put to work on large treadmill-like devices—basically walking endlessly to grind grain or pump water. It was called a “treadwheel,” and yeah… it was as fun as it sounds.

It wasn’t about getting fit. It was about breaking monotony, enforcing discipline, and exhausting people. Imagine being told, “Great news… you get to walk uphill… forever.”

Over time, the idea shifted. By the 20th century, treadmills started showing up in medical settings for cardiac testing and rehab. Doctors realized, “Hey… maybe this thing can actually help people instead of punish them.”

Then fitness caught on. Gyms started adopting them. People started running on them by choice (still wild when you think about it).

Now fast forward to today:
You pay for a treadmill membership.
You voluntarily get on.
You stare at the same wall.
And you try not to look like you’re questioning your entire existence.

From prison labor to performance tool to your daily mental battlefield… the treadmill has had quite the glow-up.

Just remember next time you step on one:
It may have started as punishment…
…but now it’s a test of your character.

And probably your patience.

Want to know the secret to being your massage therapist’s favorite client?

Relax. Breathe. Let go.

That’s it.

Stop trying to help. Stop bracing. Stop overthinking every movement. Your only job on that table is to let your nervous system do what it’s designed to do.

The more you relax, the better the treatment works.

The better the treatment works… the better you feel walking out.

Simple. But most people don’t actually do it.

Save this for your next appointment and see the difference.
