Do I need a referral?
Preventative Foot Care/Medical Pedicure appointments do not require a referral. Just give us a call or visit our website to request an appointment.

To book an appointment with one of our physicians, or for treatment of an open wound/ulcer, a referral from your primary care physician is required. This opens up the lines of communication between us and your family physician and will reduce the chance of duplicating tests or specialist consultations.

If you do not have a primary care physician, but would like a consultation for diabetic foot concerns, please contact our office. If you have a foot ulcer and are unable to get a timely referral, please contact our office.

❓A question we get asked a lot is

How serious is a foot ulcer?

An untreated foot ulcer can lead to bone infection and even amputation of the foot or entire lower leg. Early and effective management of the wound is the safest route to preventing complications.

This is why it was so important to us to offer medical-grade, professional foot care in our new space. A place you can come and have a Medi Pedi and feel confident that your feet are taken care of by professionals.

Here are 5 reasons that will have you booking your Medi Pedi right away!

1️⃣ Foot Health Maintenance: Diabetes can cause nerve damage and poor blood circulation in the feet, leading to various foot problems. Regular maintenance of foot health can prevent complications and reduce the risk of infection or ulcers.

2️⃣ Proper Nail Care: People with diabetes are prone to developing ingrown toenails, which can lead to infections and other complications. A medical pedicure focuses on trimming and shaping the nails correctly, reducing the risk of ingrown nails.

3️⃣ Safe and Sanitary Environment: Medical pedicures are performed in a sterile and controlled environment, minimizing the risk of infections.

4️⃣ Expert Evaluation: At each appointment, you will be treated by a specialty nurse with advanced training in foot care. They will begin by conducting a thorough examination of your feet, looking for any signs of diabetic complications such as neuropathy, poor circulation, or calluses.

5️⃣ Education and Foot Care Guidance: A medical pedicurist can provide valuable education and guidance on foot care for individuals with diabetes. This knowledge empowers individuals to take better care of their feet and minimize the risk of complications associated with diabetes.

06/16/2023

Diabetic foot ulcers are often caused by repetitive stress and pressure, typically on the pressure points of the foot such as the metatarsal heads (the “balls of the feet”), toes, and heels.

These pressure points may develop a callus, which acts like a rock in your shoe that you can’t shake out.

Over time, continuous pressure on a callus causes it to push up against the skin, eventually breaking it open and resulting in an ulcer.

Regular foot care by a professional is recommended by Diabetes Canada to treat calluses and corns to reduce the risk of developing an ulcer.

06/14/2023

When you have diabetes, your feet need extra care and attention. Diabetes can damage the nerve endings and blood vessels in your feet, making you less likely to notice when your feet are injured. Diabetes also limits your body's ability to fight infection and get blood to areas that need it. If you get a minor foot injury, it could become an ulcer or a serious infection. With proper foot care, you can prevent most of these problems.

Caring for your feet can be quick and easy. Most of the care can be done when you are bathing or getting ready for bed.

Follow-up care is a key part of your treatment and safety. Be sure to make and go to all appointments and call our clinic if you are having problems.

It’s time to treat your feet to a pedicure!

A Medi Pedi is a valuable service for patients with diabetes and other high risk foot conditions because it can prevent small issues from becoming major problems.

For example, in patients with diabetic neuropathy (a condition where patients lose 'protective sensation' and cannot fully feel their feet), calluses form more easily, and with continuous pressure (via walking) on the callus, a wound/ulcer can develop.

An ulcer is a serious problem - it can lead to infection, hospitalization, or even amputation. Some patients struggle with thickened or fungal nails that they either don't have the tools, flexibility, or ability to trim or reach themselves. These nails can also lead to wounds or infections.

We can help!

Our treatment combines the expertise of medical professionals with the luxurious pampering of a spa to provide the ultimate foot care experience.

You'll leave your treatment feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, with the peace of mind that comes from knowing your feet are being well-cared for by a medical professional.

Welcome to the Baker Diabetic Foot & Limb Preservation Clinic!

I am a specialist in Internal Medicine and have been working at both the Baker Clinic, treating patients with diabetes, as well as at the Royal Alexandra Hospital’s Diabetic Foot Clinic for several years. While this Foot Clinic is an exceptional clinic, I noticed patients had to go to different locations for their foot care, nail care, diabetes management, and for offloading devices. It’s long been a dream of mine to combine these services, so I am very excited to be offer patients access to all of these services - as well as a dietitian and a diabetes educator - all under one roof.

I am thrilled to welcome Kathleen, Founder and CEO of the former Accelerated Cast Clinic & Limb Preservation Centre (2016-2021), as our Diabetic Foot & Limb Preservation Program Lead. Kathleen has been nursing and leading since 2008, with many years spent in the areas of Surgery and Emergency Departments. She has advanced certifications in Orthopedics, Wound Management and Foot Care. Additionally, Kathleen was contracted as Curriculum Developer and Theory Instructor for the Foot Care Program at Norquest College.

Together, our wound care team will perform a thorough foot assessment and outline a management plan to get your foot healed as quickly as possible.

Our preventative foot care team can diagnose and treat a wide variety of foot problems, and provide the information, equipment, and expertise necessary to prevent foot wounds from developing.

Additionally, we will carry a wide variety of high-quality knee scooters and the iWalk 3.0 Hands Free Crutch to provide innovative and convenient off-loading for recovery of lower leg/foot injuries, surgeries, and foot ulcers. Our certified staff will fit and train individuals to ensure the highest level of safety while using these mobility aids.

We at the Baker Diabetic Foot & Limb Preservation Clinic are looking forward to providing advanced wound & foot care treatment to help patients heal faster and maximize the number of days spent ulcer-free, out of hospital, and full of activities.

Sincerely,

Dr. Daniel Shafran MD FRCPC

Why we do what we do. #saveyeglegs

Have you ever sat in an Emergency Waiting Room for hours and despised the long wait time? Do you or a loved one or your patients suffer from diabetes or its tragic complications such as a lower limb amputation?

Hi, I’m Kathleen Cesarin. Wife, mother, nurse, CEO of Accelerated Cast Clinic & Limb Preservation Centre Ltd. In my 12 years of specialized nursing in Emergency Rooms, Orthopedic Clinics and in Wound Care, I was constantly frustrated and saddened watching non-urgent patients sit for hours in an ER because they had no where else to go. I’ve been personally inspired by many patients and my diabetic family members who have experienced the devastation of an amputation and tragically, even death.

My passion is to be part of the solution.

What a great find! I will definitely be recommending you to Dr. Jomha's patients for aid rentals postop. Thanks Jessica Franz for our great chat regarding Accelerated Orthopedic Services.
I know there are many people in Edmonton and area who would greatly benefit from this prize. Nominate someone you know before Dec 9-2017!
