The Keepers of the Canines play a critical role in protecting pets long before problems arise.

As RVTs, they are essential to preventative dental care, performing professional cleanings, assessing oral health, identifying disease early, and educating pet owners on proactive care.

This work helps prevent chronic pain, infection, and serious health complications before they begin. Preventative care matters, and RVTs make it possible. 🐾

A 1987 graduate of Olds College, Marian’s career has come full circle. She began in bovine embryo transfer before moving through mixed practice and research, eventually returning to mixed practice. Throughout her career, her passion has remained focused on large animal medicine, particularly bovine and equine care.

Now semi-retired, Marian serves in a supportive manager role within large animal pharmaceuticals. She is excited to join the ABVTA Board and looks forward to advocating for members over the next two years.

On Friday, January 23, 2026, the ABVTA had the pleasure of connecting with 2nd year students and instructors from the NWP Veterinary Technology program during their annual student field trip.

Alongside our partners at the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA), ABVTA Executive Director Vanessa George and Michelle Welch, ABVTA Events and Member Services Administrator, met with students at the ABVMA office to provide guidance on next steps as they prepare to graduate and enter the profession. Dr. Megan Bergman, Registrar for the ABVMA, and ABVMA staff also joined the visit, welcoming students for a detailed office tour, fun trivia with prizes, and a shared lunch.

ABVTA values opportunities like this to support and engage with future RVTs and to be part of their journey toward graduation and professional practice. Thank you to the ABVMA for hosting us at your offices. We look forward to our continued collaboration as we work together to support and guide future RVTs.

Elevate your veterinary anesthesia skills!

Join us for part one of a two-part anesthesia-focused series that will go over key protocols and practical management tips for patients that begin to wake up or display concerning monitor values. We’ll cover anesthesia plan considerations, hands-on manual ventilation, and essential airway management strategies. Topics include endotracheal tubes, breathing circuits, oxygen flow rates, and why end-tidal CO₂ is critical for maintaining safe, stable anesthesia.

This session is pending approval for 1.5 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credit for RVTs by the ABVMA.
