Did you know that regular chiropractic care during pregnancy may be able to reduce the length of your labour?

A study performed on women who received chiropractic care regularly during pregnancy revealed on average a 25% reduction in labour length compared to those who did not. Not only this, but it was further reduced if the pregnant woman had received regular chiropractic care prior to conception with an average of 31% shorter labour time (Borggren et al. 2007)

Further, chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to help mitigate the changes that the body goes through during such an important time.

Hormones such as relaxin start to relax the ligaments and muscles to help prepare the body for labour. These changes may lead to general aches and pains as well as changes to mobility.

As the momma’s belly begins to grow, the low back will start to gain a more pronounced lordosis, or a larger curve in the low back, this may also lead to low back and SI joint discomfort.

Regular chiropractic care can help to reduce these ailments that the body can incur during this time, while also improving range of motion and mobility to keep you feeling your best.

What is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis recti is the thinning of the fascia at the midline of the abdomen. This thinning will occur in 100% of all full term pregnancies, with 60% of women still experiencing it at 6 weeks postpartum and 12% at 12 months postpartum (Sperstad et al., 2016). The diastasis may vary in severity depending on genetics, exercise, core strength and mobility, time etc.

Did you know that men can struggle with diastasis recti too?

How do you know if you have it?

Is there a way to measure the severity?

What can we do to fix it?

I’ll answer this and many more questions coming this week!
