What is ECP Therapy?
External Counterpulsation also known as ECP or EECP, was invented at Harvard University as a treatment for angina pain. It has since become a therapy for multiple cardiovascular conditions. It is a safe, effective, and painless treatment used to grow new arteries (angiogenesis) in the heart and can also improve artery and heart function.

When was ECP Invented?
The concept of ECP was invented in the 1960's which was adopted and utilized by many countries and the technique has been refined heavily throughout the years.

Are there clinical studies on ECP?
Yes! Numerous studies have shown ECP to be effective in patients with chronic angina, with its effects lasting for several years after completion of therapy. In a more recent Meta-Analysis done in 2021, ECP therapy may result in improvement in exercise capacity and oxygen consumption in heart failure patients. ECP has been proven to combat many cardiovascular conditions and improve heart function.

It's not too late to donate to this great cause! This year we are raising money for Men's health for Movember. Here is a photo of our Kinesiologist Isaiah and his gnarly moustache in the third week!

From their website:

"Men’s health is in crisis. Men are dying on average 4.5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.

A growing number of men – around 10.8M globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. And across the world, one man dies by su***de every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all su***des."

Movember is uniquely placed to address this crisis on a global scale. We fund groundbreaking projects all over the world, engaging men where they are to understand what works best and accelerate change." - Movember

The Canadian guidelines for Exercise recommend 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week. However, according to Stats Canada less that 50% of the population actually meet these guidelines with only 33% adherence for people over 65 years old.

Staying physically active and adhering to the guidelines will drastically reduce your risk for Cardiovascular disease!

Pro Tips:
1) Find activities and exercises that you enjoy and that you can maintain!
- Walking is considered as a moderate physical activity and walking 30 minutes, 5 days per week will help you reach the guidelines!
- The internet is a great place to find exercise programs and join in on classes. If you don't know what to do, ask google!

2) Grab a friend or family member!
- Having a partner is always a great way to stay motivated and make exercise more enjoyable.

3) Reach out to an exercise professional!
- If you need assistance knowing what to do or don't know how to get started, try personal training or reach out to our exercise professionals here at Heart Fit. They will assess your goals, restrictions and overall health to provide guidance in allowing you to build a routine and crush your goals!

Are you meeting the guidelines?

Meet Dwayne!

Dwayne came to us in February 2022 after experiencing a heart attack. He started with ECP (External Counterpulsation Therapy), completely changed his diet and started with supervised exercise sessions at the clinic. We are very proud of Dwayne and how far he has come!

Hear from Dwayne yourself!

"I have been attending the Heart Fit Clinic since February 2022 after experiencing a heart attack. Since I came to HF, my heart health has improved dramatically. I have lost about 40lbs due to changed diet and exercise, blood sugar is completely controlled and I have learned new awesome ways to cook food! The team at the Heart Fit Clinic has been fantastic, they really are team players and care deeply about heart health for their clients. My wife and I are so thankful for the caring, knowledge and a positive atmosphere. The people at the Heart Fit Clinic, care and I'm so thankful for that. My life has changed so much.

Thanks again Heart Fit Clinic team

Meet Steve!

Steve came in to see us in February 2021 seeking a change. Being 332lbs, he reported experiencing severe fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain and acid reflux. After he did the testing, Steve fully committed to the lifestyle changes and saw quick results! It is now about a year and a half later and he is maintaining the weight loss, has no symptoms and got rid of most of his medication. We are really proud of Steve for his hard work and dedication to get healthier!

Hear from Steve yourself...

"I have been working with the Heart Fit clinic in Edmonton for a little over a year and find them extremely knowledgeable, professional and all-round great people. I started with HF at 50 years old being 330 lbs with a BMI of 44 and body fat over 40%. Before seeing the HFC, I was always leery of walking up stairs and got short of breath with the most basic tasks. With their help I am down 100lbs, no longer experiencing any symptoms and feeling great! I learnt a lot about my heart health and was given the tools and support needed to make a permanent life style change. They are truly concerned for their client’s health, and really want them to succeed. Need help, call the Heart Fit Clinic." - Steve Miller
