Have you ever heard anyone refer to the gut as the body's second brain?

“Increasing evidence is showing that bacteria in the gut, and the byproducts they produce, affect mood, cognition, and behavior.”

Here is a quick read on the brain and gut connection if it peaks your interest.

Although it can’t compose poetry or solve equations, this extensive network uses the same chemicals and cells as the brain to help us digest and to alert the brain when something is amiss. Gut and brain are in constant communication.

Have you ever tried abdominal massage before? You may be asking what the reasoning behind getting this type of manual work done is.

If you are having digestive or bowel issues, it can help stimulate movement.

Improve movement and flexibility that are limited by or around the area.

It can help improve breathing by relieving the tightness of muscles in the area.

It helps relieve anxiety by relaxing tight muscles. Research suggests a strong correlation between mind, body, and gut.

Not everyone is interested in getting this type of treatment done, so if you are considering it or want to know what it might look like, talk to your therapist. If you have any questions, you can always shoot me a message, and I can answer them to the best of my knowledge. My DMs are always open.

Happy long weekend!

August is my birthday month and I want to celebrate by acknowledging where I've been and where I'm going!

I know the struggle of having to go through mental illness myself. I've come a long way, but that isn't to say that I still don't have my struggles living this human life so I will be donating a portion of my portion I get when you book a massage with me to the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

The best way I can think of is by giving back to others so that they know they are not alone. Thank you for your support and see you in next month!

In last week's post I talked about "the social bonding hormone" oxytocin. It is both a hormone and a neurotransmitter that can affect emotions and mental health. Oxytocin is said to reduce stress, lower anxiety, build trust and connections.

How can you increase levels of oxytocin?

Easy social activities such as having dinner with a friend, spending time with pets, seeing family and getting a massage are all ways that can help.

Did you know that non-sexual touch can help the brain release oxytocin aka "the social bonding" hormone? This is a factor that plays into the benefits of therapeutic touch.

What are the benefits of receiving massages regularly?

"How often should I come in for a massage?"

When clients ask me this, I usually say to come in at least once a month. If you have an area of your body that particularly bothers you, then you can choose to come in more frequently initially to get things worked out to a place where we can then maintain, but if every two weeks or once a week works for you, then that works for you. You know your body best.

What are the benefits of cupping?

-Increases blood flow and circulation
-Aids in draining excess fluid
-Reduces inflammation
-Loosens adhesions
-Stimulates the rest and digestive system
-Reduces stress, which in turn helps the immune system
-Helps to promote proper and better healing of tissues

If you want to try something different or see how another stimulus can help promote the healing or relaxing of your muscles. I always recommend cupping to those who clear the restrictions and are comfortable with it as an option.

What is cupping?

Cupping is an ancient modality that uses a vacuum or suction to pull tissue upward, bringing circulation to certain areas. This can help promote better stimulation, blood flow, and fluid movement to the area(s) being treated, facilitating proper regeneration and better healing to the tissues.

What is introceptive awareness? It is the ability to sense what is happening inside your body, both in physical and emotional states.

Why is this important?

You can give yourself something to eat if your body tells you you are hungry by tightening or growling. It is the same when you are tired and unable to focus on an empty stomach. After taking in these signals of information, you can create a plan to self-regulate.

Having this sense of introceptive awareness translates to your self-care practices. If you know you are getting stressed and need a way to relax, you can stretch, meditate, exercise, book a massage, and incorporate a regular plan on how to mitigate the stresses of everyday life.
