Temperaments – Melancholic

People with a melancholic temperament are most associated with the black-bile humor, which is historically described as being cold and dry in nature, leading them to have analytical and withdrawn personalities. Melancholic people tend to be philosophical, studious, fact-oriented, sombre, pragmatic, isolated, diligent, and reliable. They create and seek order. They are often investigators, philosophers, artists, engineers, programmers, scientists, researchers, and accountants.

Melancholics tend towards being lean. Their faces tend to have a sombre expression, with smaller or less expressive eyes. Their skin is colder and drier. Their joints and veins are quite prominent, and their muscles are usually tense.

Their digestion is irregular, and it is tied to their mental state. They struggle with fear, sadness, headaches, joint pain, nutritional deficiencies, dehydration, appetite fluctuations, impotence, poor circulation, low immunity, sleep disorders, and more. Melancholics are helped by having small meals of highly nutrient dense food that is cooked with gentle aromatic spices.

Melancholics do well with moderate exercise, but they have to be careful to pace themselves more than the other temperaments due to their more fragile nature. Warming up with light movement and stretching is essential, along with plenty of rest afterwards. Melancholics enjoy exercising alone, such as with long walks and gardening, but group sports help them to warm up to others and the world.

Useful herbs for melancholics are those that help improve digestion, uplift the mood, improve circulation, cleanse toxins, and reduce joint pain. Examples include fennel, lemon balm, valerian, lime flower, angelica, motherwort, chicory, and milk thistle.

Temperaments – Phlegmatic 💧

People with a phlegmatic temperament are most associated with the phlegm humor, which is historically described as being cold and wet in nature, leading them to have patient and nurturing personalities.

Phlegmatic people tend to be passive, empathetic, faithful, subjective, sentimental, relaxed, devoted, and kind. They create and seek calmness and safety. They are often social workers, office and medical staff, teachers, clergy, customer service workers, and caregivers.

Phlegmatics tend towards having a shorter and broader body with more fat than muscle. They have a soft and rounded features, with skin their skin being prone to clamminess and paleness. They often have gentle and welcoming eyes and expressions.

They have slow and consistent digestion. They tend to struggle with drowsiness, fatigue, lymphatic congestion, weight gain, poor circulation, mucus secretions, spontaneous sweating, and cellulite. To address these issues, phlegmatics do well on drying and warming diets (often with many spices) to increase metabolism and prevent phlegm formation.

Phlegmatics tend to avoid exercise, but they can find enjoyment in low-intensity and sociable activities. Some examples include bicycling, walking, yoga, swimming, tai-chi, and casual “backyard” games. Exercise wakes up the body and mind, which is especially helpful for phlegmatics. Massages help to move stagnant blood and lymph through their body.

Useful herbs for phlegmatics are those that help improve circulation, prevents and dispels mucus, stimulates metabolism, expels fluids, and generates energy. Examples of herbs for these purposes include thyme, angelica, elecampane, ginseng, astragalus, cinnamon, cayenne, fenugreek, couchgrass, and dandelion root.

Temperaments – Choleric 🔥

People with a choleric temperament are most associated with the yellow-bile humor, which is historically described as being hot and dry in nature, leading choleric people to have goal-driven and assertive personalities.

Choleric people tend to be driven, dominant, energetic, intense, impatient, ambitious, thrill-seeking, and bold. They both create and seek intensity in all that they do. They are often leaders, business people, law enforcement, builders, explorers, soldiers, and athletes.

Cholerics tend towards having a body that is lean and muscular. They often have a sharp, angular features, with skin their skin being prone to dryness. There is an intensity in their eyes and expressions.

They have powerful digestions and plenty of energy, but they can struggle with high immune reactivity, swift digestion, muscle tension, high blood pressure, and bilious complaints. While their intensity helps them break through life barriers, it can also consume them. To counter these issues, cholerics tend to do well on diets that are generally cooling and hydrating, as this will help reduce potential dryness, heat, and acidity.

Cholerics are naturally competitive and sporty, so they often need reminders to keep an eye on their limits and to be patient with progress. Breathing techniques, prayer meditation, and massage are especially helpful to help cholerics decompress and improve sleep quality.

Useful herbs for cholerics are those that help reduce irritation, promote healthy bile flow, neutralize acidity, and relax the muscles. Examples of herbs for these purposes include aloe, marshmallow, willow, meadowsweet, barberry, centaury, valerian, chamomile, cramp bark, rhubarb, yellow dock, lime flower, and lavender.

Temperaments – Sanguine 🩸

People with a sanguine temperament are most associated with the blood humor, which is historically described as being hot and wet in nature, leading sanguine people to have warm and expressive personalities.

Sanguine people tend to be optimistic, sociable, inclusive, indulgent, sensual, and artistic. They thrive in the “now,” chasing momentary joys and being easily distracted. They have trouble following through with projects and schedules. To them, life is about expression and pleasure. They are often salesmen, entertainers, marketers, politicians, teachers, and human resource workers.

Sanguines tend towards having a body that is balanced in fat and muscle. They often have a warm complexion and exude vitality. Their skin tends to be warm and smooth, but can be prone to acne and irritation. They are considered the most healthy out of the four temperaments, but they are not immune to ills.

They tend to do well on diets that are heavily plant-based and low on red meats, as this will reduce buildup of metabolic waste and excess in the blood. Their tendency to indulge often causes disruptions and excesses in their body.

They do well with group sports, as this fulfills their needs for socialization, fun, and exercise. Exercise is especially important to manage excesses in their blood and to help burn off what they have absorbed from digestion.

Useful herbs for sanguines are those that help to focus their scattered attention, reduce anxious thoughts, regulate blood flow, and control excesses of sugars, fats, and toxins in the blood. Examples of herbs for these purposes include chamomile, skullcap, yarrow, vervain, valerian, lemon balm, dandelion root, celery seed, and milk thistle.

Temperaments - Part 1: What type are you?

In ancient Greece, doctors would often classify people into a distinct health type called a “temperament”. This helped to predict the likelihood of certain health patterns for their patients and to provide correct advice and treatments.

Each constitution was thought to be caused by what kind of humours (fluids) predominated in your body. Each humour contains different qualities and was believed to be responsible for different bodily functions. The four humors are blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.

The four temperaments and some of their qualities include:

• Sanguine: Blood domination. Optimistic, charismatic, and joy-seeking personality. Balanced digestion and moderately proportioned body type.

• Choleric: Yellow bile domination. Striving and decisive personalities. Swift digestion and large appetite. Physically wiry and prominent musculature.

• Phlegmatic: Phlegm domination. Patient and nurturing. Slow digestion, tending towards heavier frames and less muscle tone.

• Melancholic: Black bile domination. Analytical and practical. Irregular and often problematic digestion, tending towards a slender body.

Most people have a mix of qualities from all of the temperaments. Most people have two temperaments – one being stronger and another being weaker.

🥀 Melancholy - an ancient feeling that haunts the modern world. The term originated in ancient Greece to describe what we may now loosely describe as "depression." However, ideas about what melancholy was and what caused it have changed throughout history.

The general consensus of what melancholy was throughout the ages includes sadness, hopelessness, lacking in joy and satisfaction, self-isolation, anxiety, irritability, outbursts, appetite changes, sleep disturbances, and even hallucinations in some cases. Not all of the aforementioned manifestations of melancholy need to be present for one to still be considered suffering from melancholy. It must also be emphasized that melancholy was not just limited to emotions by the ancients - disturbances in "black bile" were thought to be the cause of melancholy, but it was also the cause of many bodily ailments.

While the ancients considered it a largely negative phenomenon, some notable figures in the 16th and 17th centuries believed that melancholy was the side effect of someone having high creative ability. During that period, it was even fashionable to be perceived as suffering from melancholy, and there was a great deal of art dedicated to it.

In any case, melancholy can be a debilitating experience. Throughout the ages, herbs have been used in an attempt to dispel or manage it. Some notable herbs for this use include:

🌿 Borage: "There is no better herb to take melancholy vapours from the heart, to strengthen it, and make a merry, blithe soul than this herb." - Nicholas Culpeper, 1652. It is noted for its adrenal tonic action which helps regulate stress levels.

🌿 Lemonbalm: According to Nicholas Culpeper, it is used to "make the mind and heart merry", and that it "comforts the heart, and drives away all sadness". This is a common herb used used to uplift those in anxious and depressive states.

🌿 Black Hellebore: While not often used in modern herbalism, Nicholas Culpeper notes that "the roots are very effectual against all melancholy diseases", especially in extended cases. Never use Black Hellebore without professional guidance, as it is dangerous.

🌿 Chamomile: "it is profitable for all sorts of auges that come either from phlegm, or melancholy" - Nicholas Culpeper, 1652. This is a common and wonderful tasting flower known for easing the nerves, soothing the stomach, and relaxing the muscles.

🔥As wildfires fill the air with smoke, we experience it with every breath. We can support our breathing through the wisdom of herbal medicine.

Excessive exposure to wildfire smoke can cause harm, especially for those that have breathing sensitivities. Some common complaints of breathing in smokey air include cough, runny nose, difficulty breathing, headache, and irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat.

There are many herbs that have been traditionally used to support the lungs and membranes, such as:

🌿 Mullein: to help relax breathing, soothe an irritated throat, and reduce cough. It is traditionally known as a powerful lung tonic, making it one of the most popular herbal lung remedies.

🌿 Hyssop: to reduce mucus and coughs, all while supporting the digestive system and soothing the stomach.

🌿 Thyme: for breathing complaints that may accompany viral, bacterial, or fungal infections.

🌿 Butterfly W**d: for constricted coughs, a stuffy feeling in the chest, and for dryness in the skin and joints.

🌿 Marshmallow: for dry and irritated throat tissues with dry mucus, and as a soothing compress for irritated eyes.

🌿 Wild Cherry: for stubborn, lingering coughs with hard mucus that doesn't seem to get better.

🌿 Licorice: to support the immune system, energy levels, and soothe the throat while loosening stuck mucus.

🌿 VERVAIN (Verbena officinalis) 🌿 - Ever since ancient times, vervain was praised as a plant of powerful medicine and magic. The Romans called it "hiera botanae," denoting it as a sacred herb. It was so sacred that an annual festival called Verbenalia was held in its honour. Vervain is a plant of Venus and is therefore associated with fertility and love. Brides would put vervain in their bouquet on their wedding day to keep their husbands faithful, and it was a common ingredient in love potions. Another name for it was "herba veneris," as it was used to reignite romance and love. It was used as a ward against evil and to enact diplomatic immunity by priestly members called verbenarius, who engaged in diplomacy.

It was not only the Greeks and Romans that revered this herb. The name vervain comes from the Celtic "Ferfaen", which means to "drive away stones." Celtic poets would wear a crown of vervain for artistic and spiritual inspiration. The druids used it for cleansing their altars and for engaging in divination. It was widely used to invoke spells, and to banish them. Christians were also enamoured with vervain, and it was believed that it was used on Jesus after his crucifixion to heal his bleeding wounds.

Vervain was traditionally used to alleviate stressful and depressive moods, ease tension, relieve menstrual issues, mend ulcers, break fevers, support the liver, improve digestion, prevent gallstones, and reduce various types of inflammation. Modern herbalists use it often for the same reasons.

What is herbalism, and what can it do for you?

Ever since the beginning of recorded history, people have utilized plants as medicines. The understanding of how plant medicines worked varied between cultures, with many believing that they stemmed from the will and forces of divine figures, while other viewed them as purely physical agents that altered the processes of the body.

No matter your beliefs, one thing is clear: herbs have been used across cultures for centuries, believed to support health and well-being in various ways. Based on both traditional experience and modern research, here's what herbs may do:

🟢 What herbs may support:

• Body Systems: Circulation, breathing, digestion, hormones, muscles, bones, lymph, urination, reproduction, and the mind.

• Personal Well-Being: Mood, energy levels, focus, sleep, metabolism, recovery, inflammation, pain, detoxification, immunity, and more.

• Enjoyment & Self-Care: Teas, candles, soaps, incense, creams, and other everyday products.

• Spiritual & Religious Uses: Many cultures incorporate herbs in rituals and spiritual practices for grounding, mindfulness, and connection.

🔴 What herbs can’t replace:

• Emergency medical care or drastic medical interventions.

• The function of organs that are severely damaged or have been removed.

• Core health practices like a balanced diet, hygiene, and exercise.

• Prescription medications or necessary surgeries.

An herbalist will be able to guide you on your choices for herbal care. If you are interested in a consultation, or have any questions, you may reach me at the following:
