Pharmacy Question of the day: What are the common types of medication that are used for the prevention of Malaria when traveling?

1) Chloroquine: Previously widely used but now ineffective in many regions due to resistance. Requires weekly dosing.

2) Atovaquone-Proguanil (Malarone): Effective against chloroquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Requires Daily dosing.

3) Doxycycline: Antibiotic option providing protection against multiple infections, including malaria in chloroquine-resistant areas. Requires Daily dosing.

4) Mefloquine (Lariam): Weekly medication for areas with chloroquine-resistant malaria, with potential psychiatric side effects.Requires weekly dosing.
