Special shout out to my brother down isle, Richard McIlmoyle. I love you but I wish your name wasn't so hard to spell.
By lucky coincidence, I just discovered that Richard has a fantastic blog that everyone should definitely check out.
I just read "BPS and Teenage S*x" in which he quotes Pete Moore: "Using a Biopsychosocial framework is like Teenage s*x…
Everybody talks about it,
Nobody really knows how to do it,
Everyone thinks everyone else is doing it,
So everyone claims to be doing it.”

Could anything be closer to the truth????

I've been wanting to share some info on the research/innovations coming out of the OT department at UBC for quite some time, and now have been inspired to share this, in the spirit of the Theme of Touch 👐(hint hint-check out our closed group for the interview snapshot with Eric Purves).👈🙌

Researchers at UBC, BC Children’s Hospital, BCIT, and BC Women’s Hospital have designed a therapeutic robot that simulates human skin-to-skin contact, helping reduce pain for babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

Premature babies admitted to the NICU, often undergo medically necessary procedures, some of which can be uncomfortable. To help babies cope, techniques like skin-to-skin holding or hand hugging are recommended.

Calmer, the therapeutic robot, was created with this in mind, helping mimic the parent’s heartbeat sounds, breathing motion and the feel of human skin. Research is showing that Calmer works no differently for reducing pain-related indicators in babes than hand hugging during blood collection. The findings suggest the robot could be a helpful tool for pain relief when parents are not available. The best treatment is for parents to hold babies skin-to-skin, but if that’s not an option, Calmer is able to provide this comfort.

You are amazing Liisa Holsti🥰

How to Explain Pain to Clients (according to my greatest hero)🦹‍♂️
🔑Key points:
-Develop a relationship
-Engage the client
-Emphasize your expertise (accurately) to set positive expectations
-Practice
-Develop strategies that work for you
-Tell stories (sprinkle education under the radar)
-Influence mindset: don't feel responsible for getting them better (give them control), don't shy away from telling the truth, make sure they know you understand how hard it is

It's much more engaging to hear the words from the horse's mouth🐎 (in 6️⃣ mins):

Pain researcher and physical therapist Lorimer Moseley discusses how to explain pain. For more information on this DVD, please visit http://www.otpbooks.com/...
