The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries to the uterus and serve as the pathway in which the fertilized egg travels to the uterus for implantation. Infertility may occur when there is a blockage within the tubes, preventing the s***m from meeting the egg.

Causes of fallopian tube obstruction include infections, abdominal surgeries and diseases such as endometriosis which can cause scarring. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are two common causes of tubal infertility.

A test called a hystersalpingogram (HSG) can be used to visualize the fallopian tubes and determine whether there is a tubal obstruction causing infertility.

Certain hormones are essential for s***m production, s*x drive and erectile function. Imbalances in these hormones can lead to infertility whether it be mechanical or chemical.

Testosterone is the main male s*x hormone. It is responsible for the development and function of the male reproductive organs. Low testosterone levels can lead to erectile dysfunction, low s*x drive, decreased s***m production and quality.

FSH is a hormone that stimulates the testicles to produce s***m. High levels of FSH can indicate that the testicles are not functioning properly and that s***m production is impaired.

Our “reproductive life” begins when we get our first period, usually around age 12 or so, and lasts until our last menstrual period some four decades later (that’s menopause). But because egg count and egg quality decline as we age, we don’t remain fertile for the entirety of this timespan.

No, it’s not like our fertility drops off a cliff at age 35; fertility decline happens throughout our adult lives. But fertility decline is a snowball effect—meaning as we age, not only does our fertility decline, but the rate at which it declines actually increases. So the downward slope of fertility and age gets steeper in our mid-30s.

A varicocele is a condition in which the veins around the testicles are enlarged. This can cause the testicles to overheat, which can damage s***m production. Varicoceles are the most common cause of male infertility in India, accounting for 15-20% of cases.

The exact cause of varicoceles is unknown, but they may be caused by a combination of factors, such as genetics, hormonal imbalances, and pressure from the testicles on the veins.

It’s a common misconception that we have a 100% chance of pregnancy each time we ovulate (i.e., each month). Because a certain percentage of our eggs are abnormal at any age, and because fertilization has to happen within a narrow window after ovulation occurs, even a young, healthy woman trying to get pregnant has only about a 25% chance each month.

However, we get 12 or so cycles a year—so a healthy woman in her 20s has a very good chance of getting pregnant in a given year, if she’s trying. (That’s why doctors tell women under 35 to try for a year before seeking fertility help.)

Typically, the temperature of the groin area should be a couple degrees cooler than the rest of the body to achieve optimum s***m function.

Recommendations for optimal s***m health and production include keeping it cool - boxer shorts and loose pants can boost s***m count!

If you or your female partner are over the age of 35, you should see a fertility specialist after six months. After age 40, we recommend seeking help right away because we know fertility declines as age increases.

September is PCOS Awareness Month, dedicated to raising awareness about Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS), a common hormone disorder in women. 10 to 20% of women of reproductive age are affected by PCOS, which can cause infertility, weight gain, and irregular periods. Let's spread awareness and support those affected.

It's the best time of the year to get your farm to table fruits and vegetables.

Have you ever heard the phrase ‘eat the rainbow’? It’s a great principle to live by. Naturally brightly coloured foods contain healthy polyphenols which protect the body against harmful health conditions including cancer and heart disease.

Both fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins, minerals and protective antioxidants. However, for those with unstable blood sugars, too much fruit can cause blood sugar spikes. The best choices are berries (which are naturally lower in sugar). Pairing fruit with protein is also a great way to help slow down sugar release from fruits. Try a spoonful of nut butter, a piece of cheese or meat with fruit as part of a balanced meal to help prevent blood sugar spikes.

Fill your diet with blueberries, tomatoes, peppers, purple carrots, pomegranate and any other pops of colour that catch your eye.
