Welcome, 2025! ✨

The new year is a time for renewal—a time to reflect and set fresh intentions. But if your resolutions are fueled by a belief that you’re “not enough,” what if this year was about releasing instead of achieving?

Release the pressure to prove your worth. Let go of the idea that you must do more or be more to deserve love and acceptance. You’ve always been enough.

Releasing these beliefs isn’t easy, but trauma-focused therapies can help you access, process, and release the experiences that drive your negative core beliefs.

If you'd like support, check out my website to learn more.

All the best for 2025!

When children experience trauma, they often feel a profound sense of helplessness. This feeling arises not only from the traumatic event itself but also from having limited choices and resources. This helplessness increases when the hurt involves those closest to them or they are alone with their experiences.

If childhood trauma is part of your story, your mind and body did what they needed to help you survive. Automatic responses would have activated, enabling you to disconnect from your inner experiences or create protective layers around your emotional pain. These responses were the best choice for your life then. But, if you have more safety or choices today, these same responses might interfere with the life you want now.

Healthy boundary systems are flexible. They help us pause, take in the moment, and adjust accordingly. In safe situations, we can ease our boundaries and connect deeper. But when things feel unsafe, that same boundary system helps us stay firm and protected.

After trauma, this flexibility can feel unsafe. Think of it like being chased by a tiger—pausing to assess the situation wouldn’t be safe. You’re just going to go!

In the same way, after trauma, your boundary system might automatically shift into survival mode, defaulting to the boundaries that once protected you in unsafe environments. While these responses were vital then, they may no longer serve the relationships or life you’re working towards now.

If navigating boundaries has been a challenge, it’s not your fault—it reflects what you've been through. Somatic boundary work can help you update your boundaries, which can support you in feeling safe AND connected to others and the world around you.

✨ What’s the Difference Between PTSD and Complex PTSD? ✨

All trauma impacts us deeply, but not all trauma is the same.

PTSD usually stems from a single traumatic event, while C-PTSD develops from prolonged or repeated trauma, often where escape feels impossible, choices are limited, and help is unavailable.

Both PTSD and C-PTSD share symptoms like flashbacks, avoiding reminders, and feeling on edge. But C-PTSD often stems from being harmed or not adequately cared for by others, which naturally has additional impacts, leaving you:

🌪️ Stuck in survival mode: Moving back and forth between high alert and total shutdown.

💔 Struggling with self-worth: Feeling unworthy or never good enough.

🤝 Facing relationship challenges: Difficulty trusting or feeling safe with others.

Healing is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone. You can learn more about C-PTSD on my website: https://www.fortmcmurraytherapy.ca/complex-trauma

As a child, you may have believed you were bad or that something was wrong with you. This belief helped protect you from the overwhelming truth that your caregivers were unreliable or unsafe—a reality too painful to process back then. It was a brilliant way for your mind to survive a situation you couldn’t control or escape.

However, like many childhood coping strategies, what once protected you can start to interfere in adulthood—often in painful ways. These negative core beliefs deeply damage your self-worth, leaving a lingering sense of being ‘not good enough.’

The truth is, you were always a good child who deserved love, safety, and care. Healing begins by recognizing that you were never the problem and that the grief and other feelings you're navigating are valid.

Not all wounds are visible. 🌱

When we talk about trauma, we often think of what happened. But what about what didn't happen? The absence of warmth, support, protection, and connection can be just as impactful. Emotional neglect is felt deeply in the body and can shape how we see ourselves and engage with others.

If you often question your worth or feel invisible and misunderstood around others, it could be the result of missing emotional experiences during childhood. Your mind might tell you it wasn't a big deal, but your body knows it was.

✨ Trauma therapy can help you uncover and heal from these invisible wounds. You deserve to be seen, heard, and understood.

✨ Our childhood experiences shape us in ways we often don't fully understand. It can be tricky to grasp this impact when there aren't always clear memories to make sense of very real trauma symptoms. If you grew up with emotional neglect, you've likely felt invisible, misunderstood, or like you don't quite fit in as an adult. Your mind might downplay your feelings and tell you others have it worse because the absence of experiences is harder to comprehend.

✨ Trauma therapy can help you see the invisible and process the impact of not getting the love, care, protection, or emotional support you needed. These wounds are equally deserving of attention and care.

Receiving a supportive response from an important adult is crucial for children following trauma. Sadly, many children do not receive this vital support when they need it the most.

After experiencing trauma, children need to hear that it wasn't their fault, that their feelings matter, and that adults are there to ensure their safety. Without this reassurance, the wounds of trauma can deepen and become more complex.

💛 I'm sorry if you didn’t receive the response you needed and deserved. You have always been and continue to be worthy of support and care.
