Reiki explained without the "woowoo".........
Reiki can be understood as a relaxation and stress-reduction technique that uses light touch (or near-touch) to help the body enter a calm state.
When youβre stressed, your nervous system stays in βfight or flight,β which makes it harder for the body to heal, digest, and repair. Reiki sessions encourage the opposite: a shift into the parasympathetic nervous system (βrest and digestβ), where natural recovery processes work best.
How Reiki may work for you:
Touch therapy effect: Gentle, non-invasive touch can lower heart rate, relax muscles, and signal safety to the brain.
Attention and presence: The practitionerβs calm focus helps the recipient feel cared for, which can lower stress hormones like cortisol.
Placebo and expectation: If someone believes the session will help, their body may respond with real, measurable changes (like reduced pain perception). Having the belief is allowing your subconscious to help heal what needs to be healed. (Reiki still works without the need to believe or understand it though π)
Energy as body awareness: Instead of a mystical force, βenergyβ can be described as the bodyβs subtle cues β warmth, tingling, tension release β that people become more aware of during deep relaxation.
