Who is carrying out this research? You are being asked to take part in a research study being carried out by nurses at the Faculty of Nursing at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton (UNBF), New Brunswick (NB). They are:
Principle Researchers:
Kelly Scott-Storey RN MN PhD, Faculty of Nursing, University of New Brunswick
Judith Wuest RN MN PhD , Faculty of Nursing, University of New Brunswick
Research Team:
Marilyn Hodgins RN, PhD, Faculty of Nursing, University of New Brunswick
Judith MacIntosh RN, PhD, Faculty of Nursing, University of New Brunswick
Marilyn Merritt-Gray RN, MN, Faculty of Nursing, University of New Brunswick
Sue O’Donnell RN, PhD, Faculty of Nursing, University of New Brunswick
What is the study about? The purpose of this study is to learn about how experiences of violence and views of manhood affect men’s health. Even though we want to learn about violence, we want to talk to all men, even if you have not faced or committed violence. Because we know very little about this topic, we will use what we learn from this study to inform future research with NB men. Taking part in the study means that you will complete a survey and answer questions about your experiences of violence, what it means to be a man, heart health, mental health, pain, and health behaviour. You will also be asked some questions about yourself such as, your age, employment, education and income, but remember you do not have to answer any questions you do not want to. The survey questions will take about 40 minutes.Taking part in this study is your choice. You may withdraw from the study for any reason at any time without consequence. You do not have to answer any questions you do not want to answer. You do not have to share anything you do not want to share. What will happen with the information I share? We will record your contact information so that you can be reached to set up a meeting with the nurse. This will be stored in a locked filing cabinet in a locked office at the UNBF. All other information, such as your answers to the survey will be kept in a computer and will only be identified by a number. This number will be assigned to you at the start of the study and will be stored with your name in a locked filing cabinet at the UNBF. All information that we collect will be stored by either your number or name only. This means that your name is kept separate from the answers you give. Your information will be kept private and confidential. It may be used in other related analyses. Your information will be used for final reports, articles in magazines and professional journals, and public talks but no names or identifying information will be used. If you want a report of what we learn, please tell the researchers. What are the possible risks and gains of taking part? Some people find it helpful to review their health and their experiences of violence; others find it upsetting. If you get upset, you will be given information about what you can do to manage your feelings. For taking part in the study you will be given $20.00. What if I have questions about this study? Please call Jeannie Malcolm, research coordinator, if you have any questions about the study. Her phone number is 506-447-3413 or 1-888-457-6600 and her email is
