ππ£ Understanding Gait Differences in Individuals with Autism
Every person moves through the world in their own way, and for some individuals on the autism spectrum, this can include unique walking patterns, also known as gait differences.
You may notice things like:
π£ Toe walking
π£ Walking on the outside or inside of the feet
π£ Differences in balance or coordination
π£ Sensitivity to certain footwear or surfaces
These differences can be influenced by sensory processing, muscle tone, coordination, or comfort preferences. They are not something to βfix,β but rather something to understand and support.
Foot care can play a helpful role by:
π£ Monitoring skin, nails, and pressure areas
π£ Supporting comfort and reducing irritation
π£ Helping identify areas of increased pressure or friction
π£ Offering guidance on footwear that feels safe and supportive
A gentle, individualized approach can help make foot care a more comfortable and positive experience.
π Everyone deserves care that respects their needs, preferences, and comfort.
