Have you ever felt strange vibrations or buzzing sensations in your chestâespecially when youâre trying to fall asleep or just as you wake up? Maybe youâve also noticed dizzy spells, lightheadedness, or a kind of anxiety that seems to come out of nowhere. If you have, I want you to know: you are not alone, and you are definitely not âgoing crazy.â
When I first experienced these symptoms, I was convinced something was seriously wrong with my heart or my nerves. Iâd lie awake at night, feeling these odd sensations, and wonder if anyone else had ever felt this way. It turns out, these symptoms are surprisingly common during perimenopause and menopause, even though hardly anyone talks about them.
Hereâs what Iâve learned:
As our estrogen levels fluctuate and decline, our nervous system can become more sensitive. This can lead to sensations like internal vibrations, tingling, or a buzzing feelingâsometimes called âparesthesia.â Itâs unsettling, but itâs a real and recognized part of the menopausal transition for many women.
Dizziness and vestibular issuesâlike feeling off-balance or lightheadedâare also linked to hormonal changes. Estrogen helps regulate our inner ear and balance, so when it drops, we can feel all sorts of strange physical sensations. Add anxiety to the mix (which is also common at this stage), and it can feel like a perfect storm.
Emotionally, itâs a lot to carry. Not knowing whatâs causing what, feeling like your body is betraying you, and worrying that youâre âlosing itââitâs exhausting. But please know: you are not alone in this. So many women are experiencing these symptoms, even if it feels like no one is talking about them.
If youâre struggling, consider tracking your symptoms and sharing them with a healthcare provider, just to rule out anything else. But most importantly, give yourself grace and compassion. These sensations are a normal, though rarely discussed, part of the menopausal journey.
Weâre in this together. If youâre feeling these things, youâre not imagining itâand youâre certainly not alone. đ
Much love
