We’ve assisted seniors to get wheelchairs and walkers, filled children’s bellies thru school breakfast programs, helped displaced families suffering losses of all kinds to name a couple. A Fabulous 'Lower Loft' that will offer a spacious retreat under the same Senior House Share umbrella of retirement living. Private large bedroom with walk in closet/workspace area. Washroom with double sinks, walk in shower with seat, small spare guest room/reading/craft room and full use of the remaining living space. Gas fireplace, huge windows, bright and cheerful.

Summer is finally on its way to Muskoka – and we couldn’t be more excited!

The summer months are a great opportunity for seniors and their family caregivers to go out into nature, travel to new places, and experience all the great things that the warm weather has to offer.

It’s crucial to keep in mind that hot weather can pose a unique health and safety risk to seniors. Every year, many older adults are hospitalized due to health problems caused by high heat and humidity.

As the season warms up, it’s helpful for seniors to prepare themselves for the higher temperatures. With a few simple steps, you can help yourself or your elderly loved one protect their health, while still enjoying summertime to the fullest.

Want to take care of your loved ones, and empower them to make the most of summer weather? Tune in daily for the eight important summer safety tips to keep in mind:

TIP # 1 : 1.) STAY HYDRATED
Older adults are particularly susceptible to dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Hot, dry summer days can often make matters worse. Ensure you are drinking water regularly throughout the day, and increase fluid intake on particularly hot days. Make it easy by always packing water bottles when you go out. You can also stock the fridge with high water content foods, including cucumbers, apples, berries, tomatoes, and soup.

COMPANIONSHIP: 2 of 5 'snippits' from 'The Aging Institute'
No one says, “It’s ok for a 22-year-old to be alone; that’s just the way it is!” An older adult is no different than the 22-year-old. They might act as if, and even convince themselves to believe that, being alone is ok, because they have internalized the idea, but that is rarely the case. Yes, of course, there are some seniors who do genuinely prefer being alone, or who want to retire away with their books, just as there are people at every age who prefer solitude. And, if genuine, it is something to respect. But you shouldn’t just assume that stoicism implies acceptance and happiness. What is this facial expression saying to you??

The truth is, for most people, a lack of companionship isn’t just sad, it is downright dangerous. Seniors facing isolation are at a higher risk of depression, which, as it sets in, can lead to more isolation and increase depression severity. All too often this can lead to suicidal thoughts and even actions.
At Senior House Share, each one has their own private space but there is always someone close by; someone to talk to. Someone who cares!
