Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is any method of communication that isn’t talking. It may include gestures, signs, picture boards, communication books, or technology such as iPads and Speech Generating Communication Devices (SGCD). The goal of AAC is to help children and youth say whatever they want to say, whenever they want, to whoever they want. This supports children build friendships, advocate for themselves, participate in learning, share their ideas, and express their personalities. Depending on your child’s needs, the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and /or Occupational Therapist (OT) may be involved. This service is a partnership between the IWK and Hearing and Speech Nova Scotia. Within Nova Scotia, services are provided to children and youth from birth to completion of high school, unless services are already in place with another service provider. For example, if a child is being followed by an AAC team in their school, our team may not be involved.
