๐ŸŽฎ Many parents feel like they're in over their heads when it comes to their teens and online gaming. Instead of condemning what can be a rich social support network, a practice ground for transferrable skills, and a joyful way to connect with friends (especially for neurodivergent teens) - maybe we can approach the conversation differently and see what the world of gaming has to offer, and how our teens can balance their health, school, work, family and gaming positively (...because it's not going away).

Led by an avid gamer and experienced social worker, GameOn is rolling out this fall on Thursday evenings at the NowWhat Big House in Ancaster. Separate pods for tweens and teens to ensure a solid peer group.

NowIRL (In Real Life) - kicked off last Friday with some pizza-making magic in the NowWhat kitchen. There's a bunch of great content planned for this term around developing life and adulting skills, from managing your school schedule, to cooking and household chores, to budgeting and banking - all while having a ton of fun.

This is just one of several creative teen mini-groups we have running this term:

๐Ÿฆ„ NowTMI (The Multiverse Inside) - creativity unleashed! fandoms, geekdoms, anime, music & arts-based activities

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ NowSMH (Sunday Morning Hangout) - community outings to build and practice life skills for teens with higher support needs

โœ… NowOMG (Owning My Goals) - Executive function group focused on building routines, organizing, planning & prioritizing, via fun community-based activities

๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉ NowWTF (Yeah, you heard right...) - Navigating relationships of all kinds as an emerging adult, through a neurodivergence lens

๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ NowFIT (Fitness Is Therapy) - we're partnering with Heron Creek Gym to help teens build physical health as the foundation of total self-regulation and well-being.

Select teen groups still have spaces available, and you can always register ahead for the winter term!

Groups are supervised by social workers, and are eligible OAP expenses (also covered by most benefit plans).

SIGN THE PETITION HERE:
https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-6722

Weโ€™re calling on your support for a time-sensitive petition urging the Government of Canada to increase the lifetime contribution limit for the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP), ensuring it more accurately reflects todayโ€™s economic realities and the needs of some of the most vulnerable Canadians. This change would empower eligible individuals to contribute more to their own financial security without asking for additional government grants.

To have this presented to the House of Commons for the 2026 budget, we need at least 500 signatures by November 26, 2025. Please take 30 seconds to sign today!

Please share the petition link with your personal and professional network to help move this initiative forward.

Not sure what an RDSP is, or if you or your loved one with a disability may be eligible?

WHAT: Therapeutic program for teens based on video gaming
WHO: Teen gamers (middle school & high school groups)
WHEN: October 2nd to December 18 (after school/evening)
WHY: Develop a healthy relationship with gaming and navigate online friendships
WHERE: 144 Wilson St E, Ancaster

We'll be using various games on the PS5 to explore the world of gaming from a positive point of view. Join experienced gamer and registered Social Worker Athe J as we consider the way we want gaming to affect our lives and relationships, online and IRL.

Screens are here to stay, and there are many transferable skills and valuable relationships to be found within the gaming community, especially for neurodivergent folk. Parents - instead of shutting it down or devaluing the gaming world because we don't understand it - let's enter the game thoughtfully, and change the conversation.

Got kids and teens who are heading back to school? We've got you! The executive function load (for kids AND parents!) is heavy in September. Our top tips?

--> Prepare as much as you can in advance in the next 10 days! Create a checklist of all the back-to-school prep you need to do and pop the tasks into your calendar (clothes, shoes, backpacks, lunchboxes/drinkbottles, binders, stationery, grocery shopping for bulk supplies, etc.)

--> Move bedtime back ... summer tends to mean late nights. Start now and gradually move bedtime back each evening, so you are back at your preferred school night bedtime by September 1st! Same goes for waking up. If your teen has been sleeping till noon, bump that back by half an hour a day till they're 're-set' to a school morning wake-up time.

--> Clear the entryway ... or whichever spaces need to be organized for you and your kids to get out of the house smoothly in the morning. Have you got hooks for backpacks and coats? Spots for the shoes? Donate items that no longer fit, and clear the way for the influx of fall and winter gear.

--> Create a Life Support System ... take a couple hours this week to sit down and think about your game plan for managing calendars, helping your kids track assignments, field trips and extracurricular activities. Where will you store portal/account passwords and locker codes? Maybe you could create a 2025-26 folder in your drive, with sub-folders for each kid and a document that notes teachers, schedules, passwords etc. Maybe you can download a scan-to-pdf app (like Adobe Scan) to track all those papers that come home crumpled in backpacks right away and send them to the Drive. Maybe you need a giant paper calendar on your kitchen wall and a jar of highlighters. Maybe you need access to all the kids' google calendars so you can view and add things as needed. If you can 'Pause and Plan' now - it could help set you up for the whole year.

--> Leave space in September! We all need 2 things during transitions: space, and grace! Try hard to avoid filling afternoons, evenings and weekends with activities during the first few weeks of school. Allow for a lot of rest and recharge time as everyone adjusts to the new pace. Expect mood fluctuations and respond with the same kindness you need when you're overwhelmed and tired. Plan easy dinners. Say no to the optional extras. Do whatever you need to do to make life a little easier for your family as you head into a fresh school year.

And remember - if you need support, we're here for you.

May the odds be ever in your favour!

Siblings often have to spend a lot of time together in the summer. Sometimes you can feel more like a referee than a parent. Love this long-game perspective from The Occuplaytional Therapist!
