Larimar

Larimar is also known as Atlantis Stone, and Dolphin Stone. Larimar is a type of blue pectolite. Pectolite containing copper rather than calcium, as is more common, is known as larimar. The copper is responsible for the soft blue colour of the stone. This unique mineral only has one locality and can only be found within a half square mile in the Dominican Republic, more specifically, the mountains above Baoruco.
In November 1916 Father Miguel Domingo Fuertes Loren requested permission to explore a mine containing a very unusual stone. The government refused him. Then in 1974, Miguel Mendez and Norman Rilling found pieces of Larimar on the beach. Many believed the stone had washed up from the ocean, but the beautiful stones had come from the mountain above. He named the stone “Larimar” after his daughter who was named Larissa, and “mar” being Spanish for “sea”.
