Vacation had me thinking about rest and I just wanted to post a reminder about breaks and rest.

Breaks can look like a lot of different things, but at the end of the day, we can generally think of them like a time (set or fluid) away from work/life/chores etc.

Whether your break is a week visiting loved ones and filling up your cup that way, or it is five minutes sitting and breathing in the car before going inside, the breaks are needed. The breaks are restful in one way or another.

Rocketing from one thing to the next is exhausting.
So take a break for the rest in whatever time frame you need and can afford. And maybe at least plan for a bit longer of a break if you need it, because without rest the body, brain and soul are likely going to give out and start screaming at you.

Out of office alert!

I'll be away from March 20–29, so if you're looking to book in, get ahead of it before I leave or catch me when I'm back on the 30th.

I will respond to emails on my return but if there is anything urgent in the meantime, please seek out urgent care.

See you later!

To follow up on direction, I wanted to pose a question that looks at prevention vs. Intervention.

For Context, prevention is when we do something before it needs to be done in order to prevent or mitigate a specific outcome. Whereas, intervention occurs once something has happened and we now need to act.

So, when thinking about overall direction, are you aiming for prevention or intervention?

With prevention in health we tend to think of things like the adage “move it or lose it” in relation to our joints and muscles - the idea that we need to keep moving in order to maintain mobility down the road.

With intervention in health we tend to actually not be thinking about it at all and so only take action once a new symptom or pain arises.

Now, intervention is absolutely required when something comes up (even if the intervention is rest). But, of the directions in health you thought of earlier, are they more preventative?

If they are preventative, then the best time to start doing even a little bit is now, before the problem gets in our faces and throws a tantrum.

So, When was the last time you did something for your health before you *had* to?

Again, earlier I posed the idea about direction with health instead of perfection. Encouraging you to think about the progress, over the perfection with your actions.

How many of you feel attacked, or judged or inadequate when you look at all the health and wellness things we 'should' be doing?

I certainly feel overwhelmed and like I could not possibly be doing enough. So the reminder earlier this week and this post are a nudge (or nag) to remind yourself that perfection can't be truly measured here and you need to breathe.

It is impossible to do all the things. Even more impossible to do all the things perfectly.

So let's get real, and focus in on what you have the capacity to start doing, and what actually needs to be done based on your own current health and also your chosen health direction.

If you feel overwhelmed and like you need a hand figuring out your direction, step into my office and we'll see what we can do!

If you've been thinking about prevention, here are some ideas.

After asking you to think about direction for health care, I started thinking more about prevention. The thing about preventative health care is that there is a lot that you could do, and a lot of if that starts to get really fancy (or expensive).

So I challenged myself to think of some of the basics, that aren't fancy or new-fangled or overly complicated. This short list is by no means all encompassing, but I think it serves as a little reminder that health doesn't have to be as complicated as it can seem.

Sometimes it is as simple as brushing your teeth (which on it's own, can still be a tremendous task for some).

How are you already taking care of your health?

This year the theme for International Women’s Day (which is celebrating 115 years!) is ‘Give to Gain’.

The idea is that the more generous we are, the more we support and we give, the better we can support women individually and in their communities.

Giving does not have to be monetary! “Whether through donations, knowledge, resources, infrastructure, visibility, advocacy, education, training, mentoring, or time, contributing to women's advancement helps create a more supportive and interconnected world.” -IWD

SO, however, you feel you can ‘give’, I encourage you to do so this year.

It can look like helping educate a niece or coworker on periods.
It can look like donating menstrual supplies to a local shelter.
It can look like talking to your employer about equal pay.
It can look like attending a local Women’s group presentation.
It can look like shouting out a woman owned business on social media.

In whatever capacity you feel like you have, please give to each other. Give to your family, your friends, your colleagues, you neighbours, you community, and to strangers.

For when we all give together, together we help everyone move toward equality.

(P.S. This is a reminder I keep in my@arboursquareosteo office about working together. It was created by one of the most determined people in my life, my sister @ - thank you for being an inspiration every day)

Earlier this week I gave a reminder that perfection is an expectation, and a hard one to reach at that.

So today I am asking you, if you are trying to steer away from perfection, what direction are you headed?

Are you heading in a direction you feel comfortable about? In body, mind and spirit? Or are you feeling misaligned? Like something is missing or that you are heading in a direction you want to make a change to?

The beauty about thinking about health as a direction is that it can be as broad or as specific as you would like it to be.

For example, a health direction could be wanting to be more active, or it can be wanting to be able to delay the use of mobility aids as we age, or it can be to dominate your kids in every physical competition, becoming a tank of a senior citizen.

Now, the more specific your direction is, the greater the likelihood of you being able to take actionable steps toward achieving it. But that is a conversation for another day.

For now, where are you headed? and are the even inconsistent changes you are making right now, part of that overall direction?

Book Blurb 🌿

Be a Triangle: How I Went from Being Lost to Getting My Life Into Shape By Lily Singh

Summary

This book an ode to those of us who need the reminder that some of the best care we can do for ourselves is address the foundations

Who Should Read This

Anyone who:

- Wants a gentle (and hilarious) reminder that now is a great time to start
- Wants to laugh while reading a self help book
- Is a fan of Lily Singh’s humour and wants to read about her embracing herself

What Did I learn?

I learned that I finish books that are funny much quicker than ones that never make me smile. And I was reminded that we need to have a great relationship with ourselves as part of our foundation.

Final Thoughts

Light and heavy in all the right places!

I loved that it put self as part of the foundation - a part of the health world that can get shuffled under a rug amoungst all the other noise.

While we all want to be able to make the change we want to see on the first go, sometimes it is more of sputtering and inconsistent start.

And that's okay.

Starting or remembering to do something inconsistently at first happens. And it happens more when we create unrealistic timelines or expectations for ourselves.
So if you are trying to live up to an unrealistic expectation of perfection (when you are starting from 0), it is okay.

Give the grace.
Take the deep breath.
And then ask your self what you need to change to make it more realistic for you do accomplish it.

Then if you need a hand, reach out and ask for help - and don't stop trying to do something, your efforts are better than complete stagnation ❤

Earlier in the week I asked you are to think about the advice you gave to someone else that you likely should have followed.

Now some of the responses were about not letting stress get to you, and others were about reminding yourself that 2 cookies is enough, versus the whole sleeve.

My response was about putting my phone down.
Now, I already have strict social media time limits (my sister thinks I've lost my marbles), but I am still using my phone wayyyyy to much.

So I put 3 things in place for the week:
1. putting my phone out of reach
2. actually using the do not disturb feature at work
3. taking deep breaths

I did not fully succeed each day but but once I did, here is what I gained:
1. A period of uninterrupted work flow
2. A day where I got all my charts done before the end of the day
3. 20 minutes of walking and reading time!

And so I am curious, did you listen to your advice this week? Even if you have marginal success or listened for only one day, how did it go?

I know it was likely hard and even if you didn't, I am still proud of you ❤

Todays Learning Log: Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (AKA colds and flus)

Have you ever been sick before a major event/presentation/trip and thought “man if I could just get better before hand”? Only for everyone to say that the cold will take its course and you’ll get better when you get better?

While it taking it’s course is true, THERE are things that can probably be done to help reduce length of your illness and decrease severity. And honestly I would have not even bothered beforehand. I probably would have been the one to say go home and rest.

But that is what is great about learning!

I got to learn about prevention and early intervention when it comes to colds and flus.

I got to challenge my beliefs that getting better 1 day earlier didn’t matter.

But it does matter!

So while I don’t have a major earth shattering information to share, I do want to share that I am sorry for dismissing colds and flus.

And that we could all probably get better at detecting the early warning signs so that we can start work on that cold or flu ASAP!

Thank you to and @ for sharing these insights!

What health advice would you give your best friend that you’re not following yourself?

Sometimes we give great advice, and then never follow through with it.

Sometimes that great advice that we gave comes from a place of inner understanding. Of knowing something about ourselves that we see in the other person. And in that moment we know it would help them, because it would help us (or has helped us).

With all the noise out there in the world and on social media, what of your own advice do you need to follow right now to help yourself?
